We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanya, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The human brain is capable of accomplishing incredible things with its capacity for creativity and curiosity. The fact that we can create musical melodies from scratch, or visualize skyscrapers way outside of our human scale, or design and problem solve using complex coding and technology amazes me every day. Creativity is how we got here. It is how we continue to push the envelope, learn, and improve. As a Junior Architect, I have so much appreciation for creating and designing, as well as recognizing and appreciating the finer details within the big ideas, patterns, relationships and tangibly beautiful things in our world. I love to memorialize these details through art, and share it with my community. I chose an artistic career because it enables you to better appreciate the small nuances of our world, both built and natural, and how we interact with them.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I cherish all the tiny little details in life through the lens of my Pen. Through drawing, I try to encourage viewers to put their noses to the glass to explore those details along with me. Whether it be the curve of a muscle in a hand, the intricate molding on an old building, the texture of a leaf, or the dance of shadow & light, I want to explore it all on paper with my clients and viewers. Art is such a universal dialect, and I am grateful that I get to share my perspective of the world through it.
I think the most rewarding part of my journey so far has been connecting with my community in new ways, and in new environments through my growing body of work. The more diversity I introduce into my portfolio of subjects, the more connections I make. I have met and shared my art with musicians and rock climbers, coders and academics, architecture enthusiasts and chefs, fisherman and travelers, pet owners and history buffs, coffee and whiskey lovers, other creators and small business owners–the list goes on and on. My art helps me stay inspired and find human connection in the loveliest places; I look forward to every conversation it sparks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have the most supportive partner a gal could ask for. He is pivotal to my success, as he helps me maintain balance, manage stress and my struggle with imposter syndrome, and build my business in a logical way. I couldn’t do it without him. Thank you, Dane.
I’d also like to thank Matt Shea, the professor who taught me how to draw in perspective during my Architecture Studies at the University of Colorado Denver. Thank you for seeing the potential in my work, and encouraging me to keep going.
