We had the good fortune of connecting with TeaYaMay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi TeaYaMay, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk has played a major part in my career and in my life for a number of reasons. Branding yourself is a risk within itself with no guarantee.
When I write a song, I risk my reputation and finances. If I invest in the beat, the studio time and promotion and the song is horrible it would be a loss overall.
I’ve had to be strong in this industry, having thick skin is a requirement.
I’ve had my shows sabotaged, I’ve been slandered, I’ve been shaded, I’ve been criticized for my weight you name it but one thing that’s undeniable is my talent.
You have to believe in yourself more than anyone does. There are going to be good and bad days but if you stay focused and not lose sight of the overall goal then nothing is impossible, the word itself says Impossible.
Branding is risky because.
It requires sacrifices mentally, financially and emotionally.
Putting yourself out there is a risk because you’re subjected to all feedback good or bad which can be risky for mental health.
I recommend making sure your mind and heart are invested into making music all the way before making it a lifestyle choice.
Staying comfortable is living stagnant and risk is essential to growth.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from the rest is I make lyrically conscious hip hop music. I believe that women should be more empowering with the music they create instead of making music driven by sex and glorifying their genitalia. I’m most proud of being different. Marching to the beat of my own drum not following trends and continuing to improve on my craft is what keeps my audience intrigued.
I am where I am today due to my determination and will to be better as a person/artist , set new goals and reach new heights.
It’s very challenging being an artist in today’s society with the industry over saturated with artists who want to rap but aren’t any good. . It’s not about raw talent it’s about how much money you pay to get the play.
I overcome it by continuing to improve and letting my music speak for itself.
I want the world to know that lyrically conscious music still exists, so Google TeaYaMay 😉
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My first stop would be the dispensary. I’m a cannabis connoisseur so that would be a must. Secondly, I would have to take them to the studio to record with me. They would get to witness behind the scenes of making a song. I’m a bit of a home body outside of music so they would have to play a few video games with me as well and pray we don’t play mortal Kombat. As far as food goes it would depend on how the first stop of the trip was going lol but most likely I would cook because that’s another one of my many hidden talents.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to an artist, mentor , creative genius named Who Else? He has played a major part in my story. I appreciate his business sense and guidance throughout my journey.
