We had the good fortune of connecting with Thomas Franklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thomas, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Necessity is the mother of invention. After helping many clients build innovation management systems with whatever they used internally already (e.g., Jira, Salesforce, etc.), I decided to build one that could work for everyone else. The established platforms although familiar to the enterprises that use them don’t provide any specific data or analytics integration. With the help of data insights, it empowers enterprises to understand their patent portfolio to make proper decisions. Everyone should be armed with a good management system guided with the best analytics.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My software business, Triangle IP, is a natural outgrowth of my legal services practice as a partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton. Many can handle your patent application, but few are able to answer the questions you might ask like how long will it take or how likely is success. I found that most embark on their patent journey without a good strategy or clear understanding of the costs involved. In providing legal services for that process, it may not be in your best interest to provide clear expectations. But, having a loyal client base is all about managing expectations so there are no surprises later on. My clients are fiercely loyal and the Triangle IP software will provide all purchasers of patent services to be armed with the data and analytics to achieve their strategy while avoiding those surprises.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A visitors guide will provide the typical highlights of Denver, but I am going to accentuate what most tourists might miss that is all around us. The Colorado trail system has tens of thousands of miles through the city and mountains. Where ever you might be staying, there is a paved path, trail or bike path. You can travel almost anywhere in Denver on a paved path. Put on your walking shoes or hiking boots, rent a bike or scooter and explore from a different perspective.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have worked for over a dozen years with GreyB Services. They provide research and analytics in the patent domain. We have put together studies and reports for many clients to understand the value of their patent portfolios. Gathering and manicuring data into actionable insights over the years have led to insights not attainable to most. This partnership underpins the success of the Triangle IP Tool.
