We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, how do you think about risk?
without risk, there is no reward. As an artist, it is important to challenge yourself by trying new ideas, techniques or even marketing strategies. This is how we learn to grow and evolve our craft. If we don’t take chances, our work will stagnate, as well as our creative minds.
It’s important to remain passionate about what you do, That means finding new ways to be creative. and in this competitive world, if you don’t have something new to offer, someone else will!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been a full-time photographer for 42 years. 10 years ago, I switched my photography technique to Wet Plate Collodion (tintypes). It is a historical process that was used in the mid-1800s. There are only a handful of people doing this professionally in the world. I love it because it’s a very challenging technique, and the photographs are handmade, and very compelling, plus it challenges every aspect of photography I have learned.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in the Rocky Mountains, so of course it would have something to do with the outdoors. When I have friends or family visit, I always take them whitewater rafting, hiking, exploring, historic towns, and mines, and relaxing in Hot Springs.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course at an early age my Father got me in to photography. He was very passionate it about himself. That’s what influenced me most, was the joy photography gave him, as well as what do he learned from it. There are many photographers that have influenced me over the years. I would say my most support would be from my closest, friends and family and my community.
