We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Flanagan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tim, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Looking at the industry, I felt SLC could fill a couple of unique niches that would highlight our strengths-floral programs and sustainable solutions for existing commercial landscapes.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Once I embraced the idea that I was a landscaper, I took it upon myself to learn and absorb as much as possible in the industry. From learning drafting and graphic techniques to proper planting techniques and how to use the color wheel for floral programs, I was determined to be influential in the field and assist fellow employees and future customers. It has not been easy, and the hours have been long. I learn something new everyday-not always on purpose and not always with a positive outcome. And I will keep learning—usually the hard way. There is so much to learn from other landscapers, too. Many are skilled artisans and craftsmen in their work. The landscaping field has impressive people.
I want our customers to feel relieved that they have found a professional and relationship-driven landscaper whose experience, insight, and creativity will allow them to cross landscaping off their list of worries. I want our customers to know that we will approach their property with every competent and adaptable approach to be successful in the long term—aptitude with engagement and art with discipline.
Together, we provide relief through competence and creativity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend comes into town, he finds it imperative to relate stories from our past to my kids and explain that he has been amazed that I am still alive and doing well. I ask the kids to believe only 50% of each story; the older we get, the bigger and more exciting the stories, like fishing. I would have to grab him as his stories delve into the “they don’t need to know that” category and head up to Grand Lake to hike a couple of easy trails, sit down and enjoy the nature around us, and venture into town to grab a barbecue meal of local meats. We would eventually grab fishing gear, rent a boat, and head onto the lake to drown worms. All the while sharing stories of the past and what we see happening in the future.
If possible, we would look up additional friends in town and plan a rendevous at one of our local hangouts to continue sharing the stories we all have accumulated.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I will first dedicate to my wife Annette, who has put up with my long hours, my undeterred and passionate discussion about flowers and landscaping, and those days when only her rubbing my back eased the stress.
