We had the good fortune of connecting with Timone Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Timone, what inspires you?
I’ve always been into music for as far back as I can remember. I knew that I wanted to be a musician really young. My cousin Andrew was a drummer in a band back home in Indiana so I remember wanting to be a drummer first just from watching him play. When he used to babysit me, he would sometimes let me play around on his drums and pretend like I knew what i was doing. He even gave me my first drum sticks that I would later use to learn on books and pillows that I strategically set up on my bed like a makeshift kit.

Some of my earliest memories are of me riding around in the car with my Mom blasting tunes and singing along to whatever lyrics I knew, even if I had no understanding of what they meant at the time. Being surrounded by music from an early age, I started writing my own songs at around 8 years old. I will be the first to admit that not a single one of them was very good, but looking back I feel like the foundation of where my songwriting would go over the years was starting to form. I feel like I grasped the basics of it faster than I probably should have. I hadn’t even officially picked up an instrument yet.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My songwriting takes inspiration from many different genres including punk, classic rock, power pop, blues, country, and pop. the themes of my songs often deal with themes of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, relationships, and how I’m coping with them at any given point of time. The vast majority of the things I write about are things that I am currently going through at the time of writing. I approach songwriting as a coping mechanism for everyday life.

What I’ve recently found most rewarding is the multitudes of people I’ve met from all different walks of life while performing that have all told me that they found something relatable they can take from something I’ve written. When I started writing that was never something I consciously set out to do so it’s been cool to notice that become a byproduct of something I started in my bedroom at 10 years old as a means to entertain myself.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s been easy, but I feel like it was natural. I just sort of fell into it. I still feel like I’m falling into it to this very day and its been about 20 years since I started playing. there is just always something new that I’m getting into with it. I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I’m capable of along the way. I learned to overcome stage fright, how to use words to my advantage, how to use words and phrases efficiently, and how I can use my voice to perfectly convey what I am thinking and feeling without giving too much away.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well first i would probably take them to Red Rock open space for a bit of sight seeing. i like to go out there from time to time and clear my head. I’ve actually done a bit of songwriting there and the serenity of the surroundings was very helpful. after that i would probably spend a decent amount of time in Old Colorado City. I would probably take them to visit Edenology to hang out in the salt room for a little while. We would probably go to Mother Muffs so I can get some bacon and waffles and then head over to Slice 420 for the best cannoli in the city. We would probably hang at Nova West to play some skeeball and eat nachos. Last but not least we would spend a TON of time at Gratitude guzzling zero proof drinks.
