We had the good fortune of connecting with TJ Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TJ, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk-taking, for me, has been a foundational aspect not just in my career but in personal development and sobriety. Early on, stepping into photography, particularly in the niche of architectural storytelling, felt like a gamble. It required investing in gear, dedicating time to hone my craft, and initially stepping away from more traditional and secure paths. Each decision to push boundaries or try new techniques has been a risk, but it’s these decisions that have carved out a unique space for me in the photography world.

In personal life, embracing sobriety in 2018 was perhaps the most significant risk I’ve taken. It was a leap into unknown territory, leaving behind old habits to forge a healthier, clearer path. This decision, while immensely challenging, brought forth a new perspective on risk—it’s not just about taking leaps into the unknown, but also about understanding and managing the impact of those decisions on my life and those around me.

Trail and ultra running are other facets where risk plays a central role. Each race or long run is a test of limits, a physical and mental gamble that teaches resilience and planning. These experiences reflect back on how I manage risks in business and personal life; they are calculated, with clear strategies and preparations, much like how I approach a photo shoot or a new business venture.

Ultimately, risk is about growth. Whether it’s pushing through the last miles of an ultramarathon, capturing the perfect light in a photograph, or navigating the complexities of fatherhood and entrepreneurship, the risks I take are measured, mindful, and always aimed at pushing beyond the status quo to reach new heights.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, Architectural Storytelling, stands out not just through its specialized focus on architectural and commercial photography but also in its commitment to purposeful business practices. We believe that every brand has a responsibility to contribute positively to society, and this belief is woven into how we operate daily.

I am particularly proud of our initiative to donate 1% of all revenue to carbon removal technologies. This commitment stems from a strong belief in sustainability and the role businesses must play in environmental stewardship. It’s about ensuring that our success also translates into positive action for our planet.

The journey to where we are wasn’t easy. Building a brand in a niche market came with its set of challenges, from financial risks in early investments to establishing a reputable client base. Overcoming these obstacles required persistence, continuous learning, and an unwavering commitment to the quality and integrity of our work.

Key lessons learned along the way include the value of patience, the importance of adapting to feedback, and the continuous need for innovation. Each project has been a stepping stone towards greater understanding and skill enhancement.

I want the world to know that Architectural Storytelling is more than a photography business. It is a platform that blends artistic passion with purpose, aiming not only to capture images but to tell compelling stories that resonate and inspire. Our dedication to environmental causes through our business practices underscores our commitment to a larger purpose, setting us apart in our field and exemplifying the role a business can play in making a tangible difference.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Denver and its surroundings offer a blend of activities that can cater to any interest, whether it’s the adrenaline of a hike or the chill vibes of a concert. Each of these places—from the iconic Flatirons to the bustling scene at Coors Field—captures a facet of what makes this area special, perfect for a memorable visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
For me, this definitely begins at home with my incredible wife and our two wonderful children. Their endless patience, love, and support shape my daily motivation. My parents also deserve a huge shoutout for their unwavering belief in me, even when the road got rocky—they’ve taught me the invaluable lesson that failure is not the opposite of success, but part of its process.

In the broader sphere, I owe a lot to the vibrant community of artists I’ve met along the way. Each artist, with their unique desire to interpret and share the world through their craft, continuously inspires and pushes me to refine my own vision and storytelling skills.

Lastly, I can’t forget my clients—choosing me among the many talented photographers out there. Every project we embark on together not only fuels my passion for photography but also humbles me deeply, reinforcing the impact and importance of my work in visual storytelling.

To all these people, I extend my deepest gratitude. You are the cornerstones of my journey and success.
