We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Browne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I first began with West African Drumming as a means to connect to cultural heritage and the rich history of West Africa. Later, my studies evolved into opportunities to share what I had learned with others, whether it be in small community settings or on large stages. The joy of celebrating culture while sharing it with others drove me to continue with the work as an artist/creative.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The cultural art form of West African Drumming and Dance is first and foremost an opportunity to connect with a culture and history that otherwise would have been lost. By reconnecting with and studying my roots, this art form takes on a new meaning that sets us apart from others in that there is a spiritual and emotional connection to the art form as a method of empowerment and pride. And through demonstration of that pride we enable others to be inspired to celebrate their Heritage, unapologetically. It is not easy, there are many challenges with getting others to recognize the discipline and focus required to truly represent the culture in the best way possible. We would like for the world to know that the Bandan Koro brand represents being and doing your best, while engaging and uplifting the community around you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am very much a homebody, otherwise I am traveling to a beach!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this Shoutout to my mother, the Dallas community, and the community at large associated with Bandan Koro. They are the people that motivate and inspire us to continue the work that we are doing.
