We had the good fortune of connecting with Torey Sandbom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Torey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I grew up with a fascination for art, especially written and digital art. I took photography classes after I received my first camera from my grandfather, and I kept with it ever since. I began taking photos for fun, picking up editing techniques, learning about the mechanics of both a film and digital camera, and that eventually led to the blossoming of my small photography business. When I began my time at university, I started my major in English, and I found a great appreciation for literature. I aspire to be an author, and I spend a lot of my free time writing short stories. I fell in love with historical fiction throughout my studies and wish to continue my creative pursuit in the genre.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I began my creative career with photography, I took mostly sports and action photos. From hockey to horseback riding, capturing intense moments with a quick shutter speed was an incredible endeavor. As I continued to pick up new techniques and knowledge, I began to branch out towards portraiture. I prefer to use natural lighting in my photo sessions, so this allowed for some incredible destinations to be the background of the portraits. Nature has been incredibly inspiring in itself, and for that, I also love capturing the landscape whenever adventure calls.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado is my home, and there is so much to see outside of Denver. A trip to the mountains never disappoints, no matter the time of year! Lake Dillon is just past the Eisenhower Tunnel on Interstate 70, and it is one of my favorite places in Colorado. A hiking trail lines the lake and you can get fantastic views of the surrounding peaks. It is also one of my favorite places to take photos for any occasion. After a hike, I love to walk down the main street in Breckenridge. There are many shops as well as my favorite place to eat. The Breckenridge Brewery is not only great for its beer but also a good burger.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My professors throughout my academic career at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs provided me with the utmost support as I continued my studies. Particularly, Dr. Helen Davies was inspiring and dedicated to our academic and creative success. I thank her for her efforts and encouragement.
