We had the good fortune of connecting with Trisha Herman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trisha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I never imagined starting my own business. It really fell into my lap.

When fitness became my passion and I started teaching Zumba classes I truly just realized that our small eastern Colorado town didn’t have the amenities to offer more fitness classes. I was bouncing around to locations trying to teach Zumba and even joined a spin class that carpooled to a gym an hour away. With my concern, the conversation started with a family friend who owned a vacant building downtown who needed a renter….late on a Friday night the idea of the Holyoke Fitness Club came to fruition and the rest was history!

What should our readers know about your business?
The Holyoke Fitness Club is actually a break even business that is a side hobby for me. I actually work full time as the Economic Development Director for my community and I keep the gym running knowing that this amenity is an economic drive for our small rural community. It is a key access business that allows individuals to use the gym on their time and as a family ran business my young teenage son helps with the limited front desk. It isn’t easy to juggle being a business owner, professional and a mom/wife but my dedicated members and community help support the gym so we can keep it open.

Holyoke Fitness Club is a key access membership based gym with free weights, weight machines, cardio equipment, and various studio classes!!! We also offer kids Dance Fuzion classes, 5K races, Legacy Sports Nutrition supplements and a variety of other opportunities throughout the year.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are a community of 2,000 in small rural Northeast Colorado. With limited access to resources and amenities it’s easy to highlight our kind of fun. I would recommend coming to our Phillips County Fair the end of every July where you would see our community Pavilion and Event Center. This is a hub for events, educational businesses and our 4-H community. We have a water feature pond that kids and dogs can enjoy along with a walking path and public park. Our newly build Bank of Colorado Pavilion allows our 4-H youth, animals and other shows to happen. We have a rodeo, Rocky Mountain Oyster fry and cornhole tournament and can even hit up the Pet Show at the Homesteaders Park. Friday night you could come hit up the Phillips County Speedway and watch stock cars race around the dirt track. While there you can hit up the Chamber’s funnel cakes and deep fried twinkles. Then the highlight of the weekend is Saturday at the Bulls Gone Wild event that draws individuals from near and far.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate my shoutout to my husband!! Never did he question, doubt or discourage my dream to bring a fitness club to Holyoke. He has been behind me every step of the way from designing the gym, helping with finances and playing handy man.

I would also like to thank the Bieber family who owns the building I rent. Without them I would have never thought up this idea. They built walls, renovated and supported the loan process for equipment. It was a team effort.
