Meet Tyler Johnson | Mental Skills Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My personal mission is to help normalize mental skills training in sports and education. After being diagnosed with anxiety and depression a few years after my experience as a division one student-athlete, I was in search of methods that didn’t require a pharmacy.
My journey led me to pivot from working in professional sports to working with coaches and student-athletes on mental skills, leadership and personal development. Over the past several years I’ve conducted over 20o interviews with Super Bowl Champions, Olympic Champions, sports psychologists, coaches, thought leaders and professional athletes learning how to best serve student-athletes and coaches. Many of these you can catch on the Elev8 Podcast.
Through speaking, coaching and consulting I aim to elevate the use, knowledge and ability of mental skills. Somedays there is an opportunity to impact hundreds and somedays the most meaningful impacts are made one-on-one. I’m a big believer if we want to impact our future, we should focus on those who are our future; if we can make meaningful connections, we will create a meaningful impact.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m not a psychiatrist, and I don’t intend to be. My experience based methods are learned from the best in sports. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned from some of the best; is if you can’t create a meaningful connection, it’ll be difficult to create meaningful improvements. Relationships is how we arrive at championships.
Starting out on your own is never easy and surrounding myself with those who influenced me and my work in a positive way was critical. Focusing on elevating others, fostering the right relationships and having a small circle of trust are three things that help me overcome challenges.
A few lessons I’ve learned along my journey are that I remind myself of are:
When in doubt, elevate others.
When in celebration, elevate others,
Each day we make choices. Each day we have the choice to elevate our attitude, the choice to be open-minded to be educated and the choice to rejuvenate aspects of our life not serving us or our goals. if you can begin to see your choices with greater clarity you can begin to elevate your mindset, your game or even just your day.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was making plans, we start on a road trip into the mountains. Depending on the time of year, we’d hit up some hiking, skiing or boarding along the way. Day one we head to Summit County, check out Breckenridge and Frisco. Grab some brews at OuterRange and food at Pure Kitchen in Frisco.
Day two, head to Vail, get some outdoors in and eat at Mountain Standard (try the Pimento Cheese with Bacon & Onion jam)
Day three, lil place called Aspen. Show my friend the Jon Denver gardens, stop at Woody Creek Tavern, the J-Bar and spend the evening at Belly Up listening to music.
Day four, head back to Denver. Stop in Idaho Springs at Westbound & Down for some craft brew and food.
Day five, Breakfast at Snooze, day hike around Red Rocks ( my favorite place on earth as I met my wife there), appetizers at Linger & dinner at Williams & Graham.
Day six. Breakfast at Denver Biscuit Company. Hang out in Rino neighborhood – Enjoy the art and craft brews. Eat dinner at Dio Mio and end the night on the Catbird’s rooftop overlooking the city and the front range.
Day seven. I’m worn out, can I take you to DIA early?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have had a wonderful impact on my journey to serve others. A few that have really impacted my life and my work are Jim Thompson, Matt Phillips, Ben Newman, Trevor Moawad, Collin Henderson, my wife and my amazing parents Roger & Tina.
