We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Walton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Veronica, how does your business help the community?
I practice from a social justice, feminist, and systemic lens. So, while my main impact as a therapist reaches the individual level through person-to-person engagement, by bringing in these foundational values and lenses, I aim to offer a more holistic and inclusive therapy experience, particularly to those of marginalized groups in society.
I work to support clients in the endeavor of rediscovering lost parts of self and work to integrate into their most whole, authentic version of themselves. When individuals grow into themselves, relationships tend to become more authentic; by relationships becoming more open to each partners’ parts of self, the individual grows. This bidirectional feedback loop can happen on every level of each system. So, at the very least I hope to create a safe environment for clients to explore the discomfort of change and understand themselves better, so when they show up in their world they make connections that add even more fulfillment to their life.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m Veronica Walton, Licensed Marriage and Family therapist (LMFT) and Supervisor. After completing my masters in Human Development and Family Studies at CSU, I started working for a large agency in Fort Collins. I worked there for over two and a half years, completing my post-grad licensure hours and attaining my marriage and family therapy license. After getting licensed I started my own practice. What was great about doing agency work prior to starting my private practice, was it gave me a wide range of experience with different populations and presenting concerns. Having this experience be my foundation as a therapist really assisted me in discovering my passion areas and professional niche. Today I work with individuals and couples on relationship well-being, attachment, identity exploration, trauma, self-esteem, LGBTQ+ topics, and life transitions. I also work as a clinical supervisor to pre-licensed therapists pursing licensure.
The process of creating and building my practice is supported by the caring community of therapists in Colorado. I’ve met a lot of fellow practitioners who are so giving with their knowledge and guidance; I’m lucky to be a part of a community that doesn’t operate out of scarcity, but really values working together to support clients in the best way possible. That has been my biggest lesson as a business owner whose “service” is relational/person-oriented – it’s important to stay grounded in community and the “why” of it all. I hope to be one resource of many that people can turn to when they need, but one that works to build up their own resiliency so I’m not a necessity to thrive.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I was lucky enough to be born in one of the most beautiful places in Colorado – Crested Butte. One of my favorite things to do when people come to visit is take them to my hometown. So, I would take them there and depending on the time of year, would either take them skiing or camping. I have a few favorite restaurants I would show them on Elk Ave., and would also take them to a concert at Public House. Coming back into the foothills, I’d go boating at Horsetooth Reservoir, and then we would go to a concert at the Mishawaka Amphitheater in Fort Collins. The last must-do before they leave town would be to take them to my favorite restaurant, Safta, for a nice dinner.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My best friend, Gabi! She is also a therapist who I met in grad school. She has been such an incredible support for me during all the ups and downs of my educational, personal, and career development. I feel bonded to her like a soulmate and can say with 100% certainty I would not be the person I am today without her. Female friendship is such a special type of relationship and I find myself lucky to be surrounded by her, as well as so many other amazing women in my life.
