We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronika Sprinkel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veronika, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Oof… Risk…

What is risk, really?

Life is a risk. The world is crazy. Anything can happen any time. And I think the common practice is to view risk as some sort of an equation: If I do X, it will result in Y. If I do A, that’ll get me B.

But, I bet that line of thinking was born out of a delusion, an idea that we as human beings are really in control. Sure, we can study, strategize, prepare and guesstimate, but life is a series of random circumstance, so no matter what we do, down to the utmost minutiae, we are constantly risking one thing or another.

In terms of my own life and career, I’ve found that playing things safe is by far the riskiest proposition of all. Especially when it comes to creative work. Take chances, win and fail boldly, I say. And never ever ever stop learning.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a professional creative writer and amateur photographer. I try to capture subtle moments in the stories I tell. It’s my way of countering the distraction in our culture today. I’d like to think that my work is strongly understated.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hmmm…. A week-long trip? Well, let’s see… COVID has obviously complicated everything, so we’d probably take a week-long road trip around this incredible state, hit up some hikes, the sand dunes, Pagosa Springs, Durango, then head up highway 550 to Telluride and hang out there for a few days.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who’ve propped me up along the way. It’s hard to know where to start, but here’s my short list:

Terry Caszatt, my high school filmmaking teacher and early adopter. Neva Beach, my San Francisco landlady turned fairy godmother. Renaud Doucet, my Cendrillon director who rocked red leather pants. Andrea Reichenbach, Jen Shangraw, Sarah Maumasi, three amazing women and time-tested friends.
