We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Nye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Whitney, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I take risks with my work because I like the feeling of unfamiliarity. I approach each new body of work with a new perspective, knowing I will learn something new, whether in technique or medium. The process does not become rote, but keeps me interested, and keeps me guessing. I don’t have a particular style but there are common threads in my work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to work with a lot of different materials and processes. It is about following through with an idea if it keeps my interest; otherwise, I scrap the idea and move to another. I am very physically active, so I like to be physical in my work. Therefore I typically work on a large scale. I enjoy travel, whether on a two-lane blacktop in the USA or a train somewhere in Europe. Variety and change of scene are important to me and often inform my work. I keep myself working because it is something I have to do. Otherwise, I am not happy. There are dreams I am still chasing, and I need to get out of my way to achieve them. Self-doubt or shyness can often interfere with my psyche. So I get off track and must remind myself to get back behind the 8-ball.
My mom always encouraged me to follow my creative self, and I am thankful for her and her belief in me. I want to keep reaching and obtaining goals of showing more nationally and internationally.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am thankful to have a supportive family. I thank Maximus Nye @barkma for taking the leap to learn ski jumping at 17 and drawing me to Colorado.
