Meet Whitney O’Halek | Travel Writer, Author, and Travel Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney O’Halek and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Whitney, what matters most to you?
I definitely value the ability to think outside the box. Being able to think creatively and find a way where others would think there isn’t one is so essential to not just my travel writing career, but also to travel in general. And it translates into every aspect of life. A person can be optimistic and have a can-do attitude, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can solve problems or adapt in a situation. The tagline for my brand is “Travel outside the suitcase,” and it’s a guiding principle that has helped me through some impossible situations in business and in travel!

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart is my candidness. I try to write what’s real–not glossed over, not glamorized, just honest. People know that they can trust me when they read one of my articles because if I could have done something differently, I tell my readers that. If something was a waste of time, I tell them so they can avoid the same disappointment. If something was above and beyond my highest expectations, I tell them that, and they know they can believe it.
The same goes for my photography. I’m very proud of the fact that I never use stock photos, and I never edit out reality–there are thousands of people at the Parthenon, and they will be in your photos! I might adjust the lighting if something is particularly shadowy, or brighten the colors if it was an overcast day, but I only make light edits like that to make the photos look more like real life, not less. I try my best to get great photos, but no matter what, work with what I have–that’s the reality of the destinations about which I’m writing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give huge thanks to my husband, Steve. He fully believes in me, my business ventures, and my dreams! He is all my answered prayers in one.
