We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Thetford with homeland photography and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Whitney, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe my success in the photography industry is due to my want to provide something for others I would be happy to receive myself, and knowing my own strengths in the game. I take note of my couples budget, vision, overall personalities, and tailor my service to them. Reading people and knowing if we will work together in a way that benefits us both is key. I care about offering affordable pricing and quality work, therefore taking on clients who appreciate what I do eliminates the need for me to hike my rates. Being selective during the inquiry process helps me serve clients to my best ability where everyone is satisfied. Not saying yes to every bid, but giving 100% to those I vibe with has created such an amazing pool of clients/referrals and a job I genuinely enjoy!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I would like photographers who share a similar mindset to know that serving the 99% is very rewarding. You might not get the cover of magazines, or black card budgets but you will feel appreciated and fulfilled. Know your worth but check your pride. Just because you can charge 3x higher for a gig should you? You will attract the vibe you put out, so be careful. I’ve learned you can charge 1 wedding for 8k or 5 for same price, and the latter generates free referrals, appreciative clients, low stress days, tips, and mastering your art faster!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a photographer in Colorado has allowed me to explore all this gorgeous state has to offer! Estes Park is my favorite day trip from Northern Colorado Springs. The wildlife and views from Rocky Mountain National Park are like no other! Bird and Jim’s restaurant near the park entrance is **chefs kiss** and you can’t go wrong walking around the main strip in town. Near cherry creek and denver tech center, just south of Downtown Denver, has amazing restaurants, comedy clubs and wine bars! The perfect spot to spend the day with friends or date night!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My buisness model of serving others with honest rates and hard work was instilled by my family growing up. The “work smart and hard” of Mike Rowe with Dirty Jobs was a mindset I came to respect and use. My dad helped build my confidence from a young age, putting me in classes that I would do well at, and never making me do something that wasn’t me. I learned quickly where I would excell and kept pushing myself in those areas. After having two kids 15 months apart, and facing terrible post partum, I lost a lot of motivation. My husband supported me through everything. Helping with all the left brain technical side of owning a business and allowing me to be the creative. His constant love and encouragement propelled my small side gig to a 6 figure business. I’m forever thankful for his love and support!
