We had the good fortune of connecting with Xanthe Alexis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Xanthe, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks has been a huge part of my music career. As an artist using your intuition and knowing when to invest in your craft has been one of the most important risks I have taken. Because My album was a self release instead of having a label invest in me I invested in myself. I had to take on learning what tools I needed and a lot of those moments felt pretty risky too. I’ve taken risks with my style within folk music and really in the end the biggest risk is knowing yourself deeply and knowing what your voice is in the art you create and that kind of honesty is always a risk worth taking

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer/songwriter. I began just playing small clubs and open mics and learning my craft and then about 12 years ago begin touring as a back up singer still working on my own songs. Then I had a two piece project with a brilliant musician Harriet Landrum and we toured for I think five or six years. I think I am most proud of this last record I put out and gaining attention from some really incredible musical outlets, American songwriter, no depression, music connection, spin magazine. It felt so incredible to me to have been a touring artist for so many years on the road and see my music just expanding into that national scene and beyond. It took a lot of stamina and a lot of mistakes and a lot of just not giving up to make that happen. I think that what sets me apart is I sense of mysticism and vulnerability in my music that is influenced by my work as a therapist and my life as a mother. I guess the thing I would really want people to know about my music is that it really is a gift from my own experiences for people to dive deep into the emotion that are hard to express or maybe we don’t feel allowed to express. It’s always when someone tells me that my song helped them say something they couldn’t say themselves that I really feel how huge a gift it is to bring people musical moments that can belong to them once they are recorded and out in the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have a little secret Hot Springs that we would definitely go to that I don’t want to reveal because it’s just too special. I would probably definitely take them to a Manitou Springs to take in that vibe because there’s just no place in the world like it. We probably get lunch at Adams Mountain Café which is in Manitou and has just been a staple in our community forever and the food is incredible. Then if we weren’t in pandemic times I would take them out to experience the incredible music of our city because the talent here is outstanding and I like to brag about it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to one of my dear friends and someone who really inspires me to take risks, Amber Ridenour Walker. She is a brilliant writer and is it dedicated to writing the truth and it has inspired me to dig deeper into my own truth telling in my work too.
