Meet Jacob Bryner | Visual Artist (mostly painting), Musician, and Podcaster

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Bryner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacob, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Ultimately I started my own business because I wanted to keep being an artist and be the one calling the shots. I’m very opinionated about how I want things to be done when it comes to painting, music, or podcasting so I prefer to start all those things from the ground up. While I’m willing to be in collaborative projects I find I’m usually the one mapping out what we’re doing as a group.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most proud of my ability to really go after my ideas despite limitations. Whether it be the early days of painting where I would find slabs of wood to paint on behind my job at a local pizza place since I couldn’t afford canvases and rent, or making an album on my laptop utilizing free electronic music programs and various recording equipment for my bass guitar and vocals. Those initial paintings and music weren’t always the best in terms of quality but the ideas always shined through and I think that over time more people gravitated towards the concepts and ideas and helped me get nicer equipment and materials to just keep getting better at what I do. I’m always trying to refine and get bigger and better with my projects and many people have helped me achieve that along the way. Sometimes it’s been a real struggle either financially and/or emotionally but I always look back at the support and work I’ve completed and I’m a bit blown away by how far I’ve come and how much more I want to keep creating.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me personally if it’s a week long trip I like to get a lot of the touristy stuff out of the way. See the statues, bridges, and buildings that people like to take pictures in front of and have a meal at a well known restaurant. The next few days are about throwing on a backpack and walking around the city, try to wander down roads I haven’t even been down and find some new stuff as well. I also like to visit more historical sites and museums on these days. During these urban hike days we’d stop in at more personal destinations like a park I like or a hole in the wall diner for lunch that I always go to, basically show them the things that made me fall in love with the city. Near the end of the trip it’s more about hanging out somewhere cozy, hit the near by coffee shop and park and at night having a few drinks and watching some movies and cooking at home, or having some drinks around a fire.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shout out to my friends, family, and community that has supported my desire to be a creative person and kept me from being the stereotypical “starving artist”.

I’ve moved around a lot and always found great communities that embrace me as an individual and let me be me. Also my friends and family have always given me ample opportunity to be my creative self and do things outside of the box which has helped me hone in on what is unique and special about what I do, allowing me to then create pieces of art, music, and content that others can enjoy in their own way.
