Meet Alyssa & Ryan Stauffer Kendra & Chase Lovins | Co-Owners of Seedhouse Coffee in Steamboat Springs, CO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa & Ryan Stauffer Kendra & Chase Lovins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, Ryan, Kendra, Chase, what is the most important factor behind your success?
We believe our success lies in our commitment to valuing, honoring and prioritizing relationships – relationship with our partners who grow the beans, our customers, our community, with the environment, and ultimately with one another. We have a mantra that we love, “move at the speed of relationship; walk at the pace of trust.” In the business world, this can be counter-intuitive. Growth + Scale is important to any business, and we are not exempt from that aim, however, we are seeking to ‘both, and’ with Seedhouse Coffee: both grow + scale and honor relationship + trust. Like the saying goes, ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’– we know that we are all inextricably linked + we want to operate with integrity to see the thriving of all people, leveraging what we have to be a force for positive change in our community.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
“At Seedhouse, as we continue to learn more about coffee and the farmers who depend on it, we are committed to using our place in the coffee industry as a force for positive change. Our roasting philosophy centers on highlighting each coffee’s unique qualities, rather than obscuring them with heavy roasting.” – Gates Gooding (Founder of Seedhouse Coffee Roasters)
We seek to be generative at every level, and are deeply committed to fostering creative collaboration in our coffee roasting and in ways that fortify our local community. We are passionate about caring for not only the Steamboat community, but also the most vulnerable around the world. We give a percentage of profits toward people, projects, and initiatives that are making a difference + contributing to positive transformation around the world.
Seedhouse Coffee Roasters is located in downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
We specialize in small batch, organic, single- origin coffee + we are meticulous about highlighting the very best flavor in each bean. When you sip a cup of our coffee, you can expect a full-bodied, well-balanced, straight up tasty cup of joe.
We take care to ensure that our coffee beans are ethically sourced + of the highest quality.
We care about the environment, and seek to be thoughtful + creative in our approach to be resource-efficient in everything we do.
We are passionate about adventure + great coffee, and we love to see the two converge!
We believe in leveraging our place in the coffee industry for bettering our world + community.
Our current single origin specialty coffees come from Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico + Ethiopia.
Our current blends: our spring seasonal, espresso + delightful decaf!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone were to visit Steamboat Springs (and we recommend they do!), we would probably start with happy hour on the roof top at Vaqueros sipping margaritas while taking in veiws of the mountains. Then we would pile into our truck with towels and swimsuits and head up to the Strawberry Hot Springs for an evening soak under the stars. The next morning we’d grab brunch outside at Creekside Cafe, then head to do a hike on Rabbit Ears pass or fill up our tubes and float the Yampa river. Then we’d stroll around town with an iced coffee from Off the Beaten Path, and pop into our favorite locally owned stores, Adorn + Ohana. Then we’d finish up with dinner at Noodles and More + a night cap on the river at Aurum.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our shoutout goes to the community of Steamboat Springs for believing in the value of organic, fair-trade coffee as much as we do + for choosing to value people and the environment in their purchases of our coffee!
Like Martin Luther King Jr. said in Massey Lecture #5:
“We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly…Did you ever stop to think that you can’t leave for your job in the morning without being dependent upon most of the world? You get up in the morning and go to the bathroom and reach over for the sponge, and that’s handed to you by a Pacific Islander. You reach for a bar of soap, and that’s given to you at the hands of a Frenchman. And then you go into the kitchen to drink your coffee for the morning and that is poured into your cup by a South American…And before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half the world.”
How we operate in our sphere of influence matters, and our community embodies this at every level. Shoutout to Steamboat for your care, compassion + capacity for making positive change in Northwest Colorado and the world!
