We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan M. S. Lindgren and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susan M., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I found myself at one of life’s transition points in early 2019. After caring full-time for my two children since they were born and spending years volunteering at their schools, I was starting to contemplate what was next for me as my teenagers started to fly the nest in the coming years. Our NeurOptimal® neurofeedback provider announced that they were moving overseas, and I wanted to make certain the training was accessible to my kids because of how incredibly supportive it was for their stress management, mental health, and well-being. I decided to invest in our own NeurOptimal® Advanced Brain Training System so our kids could train conveniently at home whenever they wanted to or needed it. I was also excited to try it as well. I knew I had to experience brain training myself before I would feel comfortable offering it to others, so I committed to training my brain without any specific goals in mind. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much it changed my mindset and life within a relatively short amount of time. My husband noticed how I was handling stressful situations much better than I used to as well. That’s when I knew that opening Brain Training Lounge would become part of my next chapter in life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Brain Training Lounge (BTL) offers an innovative wellness tool called NeurOptimal® Dynamical Neurofeedback®. BTL offers in-studio sessions and local system rentals for home use.

NeurOptimal® is an effortless, informational “workout” for your brain that communicates directly with your central nervous system. It offers your brain information about its own electrical functioning in real-time and reorients it to the present moment. It’s essentially power meditation without effort and can facilitate the researched benefits meditation offers. Instead of providing specific “direction” to the brain, NeurOptimal®’s unique, non-linear dynamical neurofeedback® utilizes mathematical transformations that serve as a mirror to the brain & relies on your brain’s natural learning processes to correct itself toward peak performance levels. During a session, the brain uses the audible information/feedback NeurOptimal® provides to (re)organize itself and return to more efficient & effective operation. This training process promotes mental fitness, flexibility & resilience which results in a wide range of challenges and concerns seamlessly dropping away for most people.

Exercising your brain helps manage or promote relaxation, performance anxiety, focus & concentration, mental acuity & brain fog, emotional regulation, mental chatter, coping skills, instruction following, problem solving, multitasking, positive mindset, eye-hand coordination, healthy sleep habits, confidence & self-esteem, and more. Each user experiences their own unique transformation with NeurOptimal® brain training, but I’m always amazed at how others’ testimonials resemble my own experience including all the above-mentioned benefits.

NeurOptimal® users consist of business professionals, cancer survivors, athletes, students, children, teenagers, parents, seniors, and veterans. Everyone can benefit from brain training to help them manage and adapt to life’s inevitable stress. The FDA designated NeurOptimal® a low-risk general wellness product in 2018. It is a time-tested, safe & effective tool that can help you reveal your best potential in your personal, professional, academic & sporting pursuits.

NeurOptimal® was developed by clinical psychologists Drs. Valdeane & Susan Brown of Zengar Institute Inc. It’s been in use for over twenty years and has accumulated over four million international training hours & counting. Currently, NeurOptimal® users reside in 76 countries and run about 2,300 sessions per day or 71,000 sessions each month.

I personally know how much potential exists for NeurOptimal® brain training to transform people’s lives, particularly given the highly stressful time and place we find ourselves in today. I’ve witnessed some incredible client shifts at Brain Training Lounge. I have seen clients reclaim parts of themselves they thought were no longer possible. These clients include highly sensitive persons or HSPs who, in my experience, tend to benefit more quickly from the training precisely because of how their brains are wired. My clients’ transformation stories help keep me motivated while I work to grow my small business in our challenging “new normal.” I’ve also had many friends and family members near and far implicitly trust my recommendation to train their brain. They have either trained with me or I’ve helped them connect with other NeurOptimal® providers.

A large part of my work right now is raising BTL and NeurOptimal®’s profiles and educating people about brain training by describing the process & the benefits it offers. Many people don’t realize this remarkably simple, yet powerful wellness tool exists…yet. There are many very active & successful NeurOptimal® providers around the world. One of my goals is to join them in helping many more people change their lives for the better!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I feel so lucky to live in such an amazing place! If I had a friend visit me in Longmont, I’d make sure we drove up to Estes Park to explore the town and visit The Stanley Hotel. I like taking the “scenic route” from Lyons to Estes through a short, rocky canyon along Hwy 7. Of course, we’d have to take in the natural beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. My favorite, easy RMNP hikes include strolls around Sprague & Bear Lakes. For a more strenuous adventure, I’d suggest the solitude and mountain views at Bierstadt Lake that are hard to beat. The trail to Emerald Lake which includes Nymph & Dream Lakes is also amazing! Another beautiful hiking area is Button Rock Preserve just west of Lyons.

Longmont is host to many fabulous craft breweries, cider and distilleries. So, if my guests were inclined to partake, I’d suggest we take advantage of the BrewHop Trolley and visit the St. Vrain Cidery, Left Hand Brewing Company, Oskar Blues Brewery, Wibby Brewing, and Dry Land Distillers. As for food in town, it’s hard to narrow it down. We might hit The Roost for some Bangin’ Cauliflower, Longs Peak Pub & Taphouse for burgers and brews, Jefes Tacos & Tequila, Summit Tacos, or Georgia Boys BBQ (my husband’s fave)!

We’d also have to SUP McIntosh Lake or Union Reservoir and relax on the water with an incredible sunset view of our Twin Peaks – Mount Meeker and Longs Peak. We could spend a day on a boat rental at Carter Lake Reservoir west of Berthoud. Estes Park, Boulder, Loveland, Lyons, Fort Collins, and Denver are all within a 45-minute drive from Longmont. The list of things to do from here is long!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I must dedicate my Shoutout to Drs. Valdeane & Susan Brown, the co-developers of NeurOptimal® Dynamical Neurofeedback®. It really would have felt impossible for me to launch my own business (during a global pandemic no less) without brain training. NeurOptimal® has allowed me to regain a calm confidence I’d lost over the last decade. I can’t overstate just how much brain training has changed my life!

After experiencing some traumatic, highly stressful, and emotionally challenging events, I began struggling with anxious feelings and occasional overwhelm for nearly a decade before I trained my brain. No matter how hard I tried through multiple interventions, I didn’t fully recover my “old self” (which is now my new and improved self) until I tried NeurOptimal®. Mental fitness training has dramatically changed so many aspects of my life. I don’t want to imagine what my life would feel like right now without it, especially with all the changes brought about by the pandemic. A driving purpose behind Dr. Val and Dr. Sue’s years-long development of NeurOptimal® neurofeedback and Zengar’s stated mission today is “to relieve suffering.” That’s exactly what it’s done for me, my family, and many of my friends & clients!
