We had the good fortune of connecting with Calen Gardner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Calen, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Keep going till you loose interest in the subject and it feels like work more that something fun. It may be better to move on to different hobby if you’re not having fun anymore.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started out by going to trade school right after high school for automotive technology. Then got a job at a dealership changing oil. Over the years moved up to a senior technician and making a living without having a ton of student loan debt. Not all aspects of this career were/are easy. Even enjoying learning information about automotive technology doesn’t make it easy to do. Applying classroom knowledge to real world applications had a learning curve for me. I learn hands on and got to see what’s happening rather than being told what’s happening. I’ve learned business wise that if you’re gonna start a business, you’re better off doing what you’re knowledgeable about and what you enjoy doing. That will offer the most chances of success. Automotive photography and being a mechanic go together in some ways because you actually know what people have done to there modified vehicles and can have a informative conversation with them and provide photos that they can look back on, like a slip in time, its how I came up with Timeslip Captures.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, Denver can be cool if you’ve never seen it before. Im not much of a city person though. Id probably show them around the local car scene. Cars and Coffee or a local car meet of some sort. Hypothetically speaking going to an event at Bandimere Speedway can be an awesome experience. Being the mountains are so close, Garden of the Gods is a neat place, as well as Red Rocks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without my family, specifically my grandpas, A love of cars from a young age snowballed into a career in the automotive field that expanded into automotive photography and photography in general at the same time.
