We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Klain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was never my goal to own or run my own business. I thought it would take away from my professional passion of being a physical therapist. I love helping people recover from injury, giving them hope and encouragement, allowing them to return to their desired activities, and helping them work towards living a healthy life free of pain. This passion was present the day I started physical therapy school in 2006 and continues to burn brightly today. But a few years ago, I found myself in a rut. I was overworked, frustrated, and tired. Luckily for me, in a wild turn of events, I found myself in Thailand when the world shut down due to COVID in March 2020. After enduring a 6 week lock-down in Phuket, my husband and I made the decision to stay in Thailand for a few more months which ultimately turned into a 14 month “mid-life retirement”. I had no work and no responsibilities, just a much needed break from my career and the hustle and bustle of the United States. This time allowed me the opportunity to decide what I wanted to do with my career, how I wanted to serve the community, and to reflect on my relationship with the healthcare industry.

Over the last 15 years the healthcare industry, specifically health insurance, has interfered with the ability to provide high-quality patient care in the way people really need it. Circumnavigating health insurance restrictions is an exhausting game to play; it was a game I played for 10+ years while working in traditional outpatient physical therapy practices in Florida, Colorado, and Alaska. I didn’t want to play the game anymore, so I started my own business. Physio, Yoga & Wellness is founded on the idea that healthcare shouldn’t be determined by health insurance visits numbers and shouldn’t exist in silos. In addition to being a physical therapist, I am also a yoga instructor, certified in nutrition, a personal trainer, a strength and conditioning specialist, and provide health coaching and run coaching services. I specialize in treating runners, recreational activities, and those that have suffered a concussion and have issues with dizziness (vestibular disorders). Combining all these skills, along with the skills of my network connections, allows people to live a healthy life along the continuum of injury, recovery, and activity.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Physio, Yoga & Wellness helps active people achieve their healthy lifestyle goals by bridging the gap between treatment, exercise, and lifestyle. We believe investment in your health leads to a life full of joy, gratitude and satisfaction. By disrupting the traditional treatment of injuries and pain, we help people not only recover but empower them to implement strategies to stay pain-free and healthy. Achieving a healthy life can be complex and complicated, that is why we partner with a variety of healthcare providers to ensure clients are receiving what they need from all aspects of care. Counselors and mental health providers, massage therapists, boutique gym owners, dieticians, and functional medicine providers are just a few of our “go to” providers to ensure a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to care. This is especially important when helping runners that aren’t eating well recovery from injury or maximize their training, or helping someone recover from a concussion, or managing an injury associated with trauma.

Healthcare so often is “silo’ed”, meaning that each discipline exists within itself and doesn’t communicate or strategize with other providers. This can be detrimental to patient care, leading to prolonged recovery, inefficient and ineffective care, and general frustration. Collaborating with other likeminded healthcare professionals is the key to improving the quality of healthcare.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Colorado is amazing for so many reasons! I moved away for 8 years and since coming back 2 years ago, I appreciate it even more. I love the energy, cocktail bars, and music in Denver, but my favorite Colorado experiences involve road tripping and embracing all of the outdoor activities.

A 7 day road trip would involve non-stop fun and activities including:
1. Mountain biking the Emerald Mountain trails in Steamboat Springs
2. Soaking in Strawberry Hotsprings outside of Steamboat Springs
3. Biking up and over Vail pass to Copper (and back!)
4. Strolling around Ouray and hanging out in the Vapor Caves
5. Biking or hiking (or both!) through Crested Butte, and then eating pizza at The Secret Stash
6. Whitewater rafting in Buena Vista
7. Drinking wine and eating tapas at Barcelona in Denver’s RINO district

When I really think about it, 7 days isn’t enough! Things that didn’t make the cut are Red Rocks (for a concert or just for a hike), hiking the incline in Manitou Springs, river surfing, and bar hopping around the Highlands. Denver is the perfect place to be for city living and access to all things outdoors.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have worked alongside many impressively educated and knowledgeable physical therapists in my career helping me learn how to diagnosis and treat better. But 2 collegues stand out from this traditional mentorship; Corina and Zuzana encouraged me to start my own practice many years ago, before it was even on my radar. They not only encouraged me to start my own practice, they were there to advise, help me, and guide me when I was finally ready.
