Meet Dr. Atousa Safavi, MS, DDS, ASBA

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Atousa Safavi, MS, DDS, ASBA Diplomate and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Atousa, how does your business help the community?
A moment during a Spear Education lecture changed the way I practice dentistry. A faculty member said something that stopped me cold: a child who snores or grinds their teeth isn’t simply “normal.” I remember gasping quietly and thinking, what does that mean? That’s my child.
After class, I found him and asked him to explain. He asked me a few questions in return. Is she small for her age? Is she tired all the time? One by one, he listed symptoms my daughter had shown at some point, and that’s how my search for answers began.
It took me three years to figure out which direction to go. I took class after class, met with specialist after specialist, and read everything I could find. Along the way, I discovered that my other daughter’s airway health was actually worse; her symptoms were just quieter and easier to miss. Then I realized my husband was living with sleep apnea, and he became my toughest case yet. I remember telling a colleague that I was taking an exam to become a Diplomate with the American Sleep and Breathing Academy (ASBA), and I still hadn’t been able to help my own husband. Not long after that conversation, in that meeting, I came across the technology that finally gave us real solutions for him.
Airway health is complicated, and for those of us who dig deep enough to find our own answers, is because it’s personal. That personal search is exactly what allows me to help families in our community today, help children grow and thrive, and bring couples who’d been sleeping in separate rooms back into the same bed.
What that search taught me is how many important signs get missed during a child’s critical years of growth, and how many adult symptoms trace back to years of not breathing properly.
Today, that’s the heart of what we do at Colorado Dental Wellness Center. We help people understand that oral health is deeply connected to whole-body wellness. The mouth affects how we breathe, sleep, heal, and feel every day.
Sometimes, the biggest impact starts with a routine dental visit. A parent may bring their child in for a cleaning and leave with a better understanding of why their child snores, grinds their teeth, or breathes through their mouth. Those conversations can lead families to ask better questions, seek early support, and make informed decisions about their health.
What should our readers know about your business?
Colorado Dental Wellness Center is a whole-body dental practice serving the Denver and Greenwood Village community. We provide biological, cosmetic, family, sleep, TMJ, and general dental care, and what sets us apart is our focus on the person behind the smile.
We believe great dentistry is about more than healthy teeth. It’s about understanding how breathing, sleep, jaw function, comfort, and overall wellness are connected. That means taking the time to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and look for patterns that might otherwise be overlooked.
I’m especially passionate about screening children during their important years of growth, particularly between ages four and ten. It’s not about creating fear. It’s about creating awareness, supporting healthy development, and helping families ask better questions before small concerns become bigger ones.
We offer dentistry with depth. Yes, we care about beautiful smiles, but we also care about helping people breathe better, sleep better, feel better, and enjoy a healthier quality of life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would want them to experience what I love most about Colorado: the mountains, fresh air, hiking trails, and the peace that comes from being in nature.
We would spend time at Red Rocks, hike near the Flatirons in Boulder, visit Mount Falcon Park, and plan a special day at Rocky Mountain National Park. I’d also mix in slower moments around Cherry Creek, Union Station, and the Denver Botanic Gardens.
For me, the best trip wouldn’t be about rushing through a checklist. It would be about movement, nature, meaningful conversations, good food, and mountain air.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been blessed with many wonderful faculty members, mentors, colleagues, patients, and team members who have shaped my journey.
One person who truly brought it all together is Dr. Katie To. Her teachings deeply resonated with the kind of dentistry I believe in: comprehensive, connected, and rooted in whole-body health. Through her work, the pieces finally came together for me.
I also want to recognize my patients and my team. My patients remind me that dentistry is personal, and my team brings compassion, trust, and genuine care into every patient experience.
