We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackson Maddox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackson, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I essentially run 2 businesses and sort of a 3rd if you count my band, Magnolia Grove. I’ve known from a young age that I wanted to make money doing music, so everything has sort of fallen into place with that goal in mind. After graduating audio engineering school, I interned at a studio up in Boulder and that’s where I really learned the ins and outs of owning a recording studio. I’d say that gave me the blueprint for my current plan. The main factor in running a full scale recording studio is having the money to continually reinvest in the business, so that you can charge enough to make a living and compete with other studios. That’s where real estate came in.

I had finished my internship and studio jobs were few and far between, which brought me to the realization that the best path forward was one that I needed to create for myself. I come from a family full of real estate agents, so I knew that it was a job that could offer me flexibility as well as the earning potential to keep investing in my recording business. I currently run my own studio, hold a real estate license, and play shows with my band regularly.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My most recent venture has been with real estate, which is the lifeblood that fuels my studio business. It certainly isn’t easy getting started, especially as a young person whose friends aren’t ready to buy houses yet, but I’ve found that the same principles apply between the recording business and being a realtor. You’re in the business of selling yourself more so than any product, so you need to build relationships and trust. I have definitely met my fair share of obstacles in this first year as an agent, but I continue to push on because I’ve spent the better part of 3 years refining my plan to achieve my goals. Knowing that I’ve developed the best possible strategy for myself keeps me on course.

Above all else, I think I’d want potential clients to know that I come from a place of passion in everything I do, and that to me, real estate is more than just a means to an end, it’s the family business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first stop after leaving the airport would definitely be Denver Central Market on Larimer. Vero’s Italian has great pizza and the Curio Bar is really nice. That tends to impress people when it’s the first stop. Being from the south, most of my friends barely see hills, much less mountains, so there’s going to be at least 2 hiking trips and maybe a camping trip on the schedule if the weather is nice. After a hike, we’re definitely going to have to hit a brewery or two. New Terrain Brewing Company would be my first pick for sure. They have food trucks on weekends and a lot of people bring their dogs too! As a musician, a concert or two is mandatory so we would probably check out Lost Lake or Globe Hall to see some local music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my parents first and foremost, who have supported me every step of the way and have never doubted my abilities. I think they have more faith in me than I have in myself sometimes!
