We had the good fortune of connecting with Violet Witchel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Violet, what do you attribute your success to?
I think the most important factor behind my success in social media is the ability to continually fail and still keep trying. In social media especially, however, I think this applies to all sales jobs, there are going to be bad days, months, and even years. It’s going to feel like everything you do is horrible and you’re a failure and you need to quit. But I think continuing to create and keep trying new things and producing products when you feel like it’s going nowhere and nothing is working is so so important.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
. I think that a lot of people relate to my content. I started in my dorm room filming videos of me making tacos. I don’t have a professional background or any knowledge and a lot of my growth and learning came from getting feedback from my followers. I essentially gained 2 million followers over my junior and senior years of college. Most of that happened when I was basically in isolation so everything seemed almost fake, but when covid ended my entire life had changed pretty drastically and it was incredibly shocking. Normally you receive the opinions and feedback of your close friends and family but when you have a following that level of feedback is scaled 1,000x. It can be really challenging at times but I think it also makes you grow as a person and learn much faster. I want people to know how grateful I am for my platform and the opportunities I’ve been given.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love all of the little coffee shops around San Francisco. I would start the morning with a workout class. I love Greg Bianci’s classes he does HIIT workouts on Ocean Beach. We’d have to hit my favorite brunch spots: Heist for pancakes, Plow for eggs, and Wooden Spoon for bloody may’s. Then we could do a little shopping downtown, day hikes in Marin, paddle-boarding on the bay, and picnics in Golden Gate park. just kind of explore the city. For dinner, Hog Island Oysters is an experience, Fort Point Brewing has a life-changing crab cobb salad, and Lazy Bear for something fancy if we can get a reservation. I think San Francisco is such a fun city to walk around I love it!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think there are a lot of people that are instrumental in my success. My parents John Witchel and Jessica Wheeler, have supported me in every career venture and idea that I’ve had both financially and emotionally which I’m eternally grateful for. My grandmother inspired my love for cooking and taught me most of what I know. The Ott family of James ranch in Durango ran the 4H I was a part of and gave me a deeper appreciation for where my food comes from. My freshman year English professor Amitava Kumar gave me so much thoughtful insight and support at a time when I was trying to find my passion. My health and economics teacher Alicia Atwood gave me such an interesting perspective on the health of this country and the factors behind it and it’s something that I think about a lot when creating my recipes. There are so many people I’m grateful for and I don’t think I’d be where I am today without any of those I’ve listed as well as many more!
