Meet Secret Circus Society | Circus Collective

We had the good fortune of connecting with Secret Circus Society and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Secret Circus Society, what principle do you value most?
Founded in the spring of 2018 in Durango, CO. We set out on our mission to break the monotony of everyday life and bring a little bit of magic into the world. As we grew our skills along the way, we also grew our outreach. Partnering with non-profits, schools, education programs and venues: to help bring the love of circus and play to our, as well other, communities.
We love inspiring people to step outside the box of their everyday abilities. We believe strongly in creating a platform for performance arts to excel and supporting artists of all kinds. We also strive to create an environment where people feel comfortable to collaborate and express their artistic visions.
We work with members from all different groups across the state, to truly support the individual artists and their communities. We also feel strongly about creating a space with an all inclusive cast of varying cultural backgrounds, body types, and genders. Everyone is welcome.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Secret Circus Society (SCS) is a performing arts collective dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for artist to thrive through street theatre and stage performances. SCS has a focus to inspire, promote inclusion, support the local economy, encourage access to the arts, foster healthy choices, and to use the tools of performance as a catalyst for individual, social and community development.
To achieve these goals we have produced theatre productions, pocket shows, street performances, fundraisers and collaborations with non-profits. We stimulate local economy by employing performers, crew, venues, print facilities, costume designers, encouraging increased ticket sales at events and more.
We bring artists together and encourage collaboration. We recently produced TOYS, collaborating with three non-profits to bring gifts and money to disadvantaged kids within our community during the pandemic.
The Lesson we have learned is that collaboration is the key to success. We are stronger together.
Continuing to support performance arts during the pandemic was one of the biggest challenges we faced by continuously adapting to help bring happiness and play to a world that lacked interactivity.
We pride ourselves on bringing new things that push the envelope of physicality and what’s acceptable as art.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would start the week with a multi day white water rafting trip full of the adventure and beauty of floating through canyons, desert, and forests along the river. We would play guitar and sing around the fire and gaze at the stars while eating gourmet camping food.
We would be sure to stop at Orvis Hotsprings for a relaxing soak.
Once we got back to Durango, we would bring them to eat at Michells crepe place, animas chocolate company and primi.
We would complete the week with a circus pocket show performance full of aerial acrobatics, juggling, stilt walking, fire spinning and clowning.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to dedicate our shoutout to all the people who have supported us through the years. Special thanks to iAM MUSIC Institute, The Durango Creative District, The Durango Arts Center, and our local community that supports us. Thank you for helping us bring joy and wonderment to the world.
