We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Renner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vanessa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think of risk as being brave, as daring to show up just as we are, as taking a leap of faith and jumping into the unknown. Risk has played a very big role in my life, when moving 5 years ago to the U.S. from Mexico City with my family. This implied leaving our families and lives behind to start a new one. Starting from scratch in a new country, with a different language was no easy task. Starting a new business focused only on women meant a lot to me. I knew I had to embrace what being a woman entails, with its struggles and its wins.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Life Unminimal is a lifestyle blog for women, specializing in wellness, relationships, motherhood, food, and style. Our goal is to be a go-to guide for women. While we strive every day to declutter our spaces and our minds of all the noise and the mess, life happens! No minimalism or Marie Kondo-ing can be achieved while raising kids, cooking breakfast, making lunches, doing laundry, juggling work, marriage, beauty, and fitness all at the same time. Life Unminimal is an invitation to embrace our messy lives together and enjoy the journey that comes with it. This is a space for women to find inspiration and joy, a place where women can see and accept themselves as the great women they are. There are many women blogs out there but what sets us apart from our competitors, is our honest voice, we aim for an honest and approachable tone, which makes readers come back for more. Before launching Life Unminimal, I longed for a business of my own where I could combine my role as a professional and a mother of two. Working a nine to five did not allow me to spend enough time with my children and always felt I was missing on their little moments. This spoke to me so loudly I needed to find a way to connect with other women who felt the same way. I created a blog where I could contribute to women out there who are in this same situation. I realized my posts started to resonate with other women and that kept me motivated to write more. Moving to the U.S. with my family was a big challenge, building a new life in a new country was an eye-opening experience, I had a lot to learn. We left our families back in Mexico and it felt lonely at times. Once Life Unminimal was launched, I started worrying about what I had to offer, my content and how to keep it interesting, I had to find my voice. I believe the hardest part was gaining our reader’s trust. Getting followers is a priority to some but at Life Unminimal we believe in trust, in creating a close relationship with our readers and this has been a priority since day one.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would go to the Tattered Cover Book Store on Colfax, one of the few local bookstores that has survived the big chains that offers a very cozy feel. I would definitely visit Union Station, I love the lobby´s grandness . I could sit there for hours watching people walk by with a cup of coffee from Pigtrain Coffee Company. I can only dream of the places I´d go. Would not want to miss whatever exhibit is on at the Museum of Contemporary Art and would definitively walk on Larimer Street only to have dinner at Osteria Marco for the most delicious grilled bread with ricotta and burrata and the Artisan pizza.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to Lizi Oceransky, who taught me to dare greatly. To my husband, my rock.
