We had the good fortune of connecting with Moriah Petree and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moriah, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I wanted to pursue a creative career because I loved the idea of being able to combine work with creativity! A lot of careers don’t include getting to express your creativity and artistry. You always hear stereotypes that everyone hates their jobs and I didn’t want that to be me! I’ve always loved being as creative as possible in every area of life and I was always doing arts and crafts projects growing up, so it was kind of a natural path.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I hope to one day make photography my full – time career, but for right now, I practice a lot and have patience because it isn’t an easy field to break into. I definitely still have a long way to go and it definitely isn’t easy!! Pursuing what you want takes a lot of energy, both physical and mental. You have to patience with yourself as well, you can’t become a full time professional photographer overnight. It’s not a linear path and you will have days when you think to yourself, “what on earth am I doing?” You have to have a lot of people around you supporting your dream and supporting you too!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In and around Denver and Aurora I have a lot of favorite spots! Voodoo doughnuts is an amazing way to start the day, along with a Dutch Bros rebel drink! I love going to Rockies games at Coors Field, and walking around Downtown. Cheesman Park is always beautiful in Spring and Summer time! I try to get up to the mountains as often as possible and go on a few hikes, or if it’s snowy, my favorite way to spend my time is snowboarding at Keystone or Breckenridge!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One place full of amazing people that had a big impact on me is Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, MT. This school has an amazing structure and has such a fantastic way of teaching. They teach what is relevant in the current industry and they teach from personal experience as well. The teachers here have a passion of teaching the next generation of amazing photographers and making sure we are equipped for the real world of photography.
