We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Matthews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Staying consistent is key to everything. I’ve learned the hard way a ton of times how inconsistency will hurt any long term progression you may have already achieved or hope to achieve. Being consistent will get you through those times that you feel unmotivated to work or when times just get hard in general.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been making music for over 15 years now. It’s been a long road but I’ve gotten to do so many dope things because of it. Travel, radio interviews, tours, concerts, music videos, and a lot more. Music is something I don’t think I’ll ever put down fully as I own a recording studio “Frontier Sound Studio” and get to work with so many amazing artists through that channel of business. I mainly make what has been dubbed ‘Country Rap’ I don’t think it should be called this because it is just Southern Hip Hop which has existed for a long time now. I like to mix rap music with an outlaw country vibe and writing. It’s like putting Jay-Z and Waylon Jennings together for the ultimate Outlaw Rap fusion. My music is 95% my life and 5% entertainment, most of my songs are first hand experiences with life. We don’t always get to have an outlet for our feelings and thoughts but I’ve been blessed to find mine. My music is for the hard working class who have been through more hell than they would have chosen and live everyday to make their life easier for the better.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would have them hit Colorado Springs. We would have to hit T-Byrds taco and tequila, then catch a show at the black sheep, and check out the view at Garden of The Gods. Graffiti Falls in Manitou is another dope spot to hike and see the scenery that not too many people know about. I think they may have changed that area to make it more tourist friendly than it used to be.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My OG, Justus Samuels has been and continues to be a huge motivator and mentor in my life. He helps me keep my head on straight when I’m under pressure and guides me with the best intentions when I need it. The dude is just a solid human being and deserves a lot more credit than he is given. It’s important to give flowers to those who truly deserve it even when they’re too humble to accept them.
