We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Schweitzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hannah, what matters most to you?
Community is the value that matters the most to me in my life. I have found that deep friendships and honest community has provided the greatest joy when I’ve needed it most, the greatest strength when I’ve needed it most, and the greatest source of love when I’ve needed it most.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began postpartum work after the birth of my own son in 2021. As a postpartum doula, I have the joy and privilege of entering into a family’s home after a baby arrives with the goal of caring and nurturing the mom as she recovers both physically and emotionally from the birth process. Although postpartum care is newly gaining appreciation, this type of care has been lost for quite a few generations as women have struggled to push aside any of their own needs after becoming a mother, and focusing entirely on the needs of her family and the new baby. I am so proud to be doing postpartum care, because I believe that when the mother feels fully and wholly supported and nurtured, that care and love will extend from her into her family and into her communities.

One of my favorite quotes is from Julia Jones who says “When a baby is born, so is a mother. And the birth of a mother can be more intense than childbirth.” I am hopeful that the world can begin to understand the enormous transition that a woman endures when a baby is born, and respond in a way that uplifts, values, and prioritizes upmost care for the mother in the early postpartum months and beyond.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The great thing about Grand Junction is there are places to go regardless of the season! When a friend visits, we almost always plan a day hiking if it is Summertime on the Mesa, or XC skiing if it’s Winter! One of our favorite things to do with visitors is to drive to Fruita in the evening, snag a couple pizzas from Hot Tomatoes, and drive back to Junction by way of the Monument, stopping to eat our pizza along the way. If it is late summer, we will always exclusively order the Peach Pizza.

Since I live downtown, a lot of my favorite spots are within walking distance, which is amazing! A great day in town would consist of heading to Copeka coffee for a cappuccino and toast, and then probably grabbing a loaf of sourdough from Kulina Lani to make sandwiches for the afternoon. Some other in town food spots that I love are Roots Gastrohub, Hog & the Hen, and 626 on Rood.

In the summer we love to take visitors to Palisade for the day to hit up the amazing farmers market on the weekends, do some biking or hiking, and most essential, finishing off the evening at Peche!

As far as outdoor activities, we never miss an opportunity for a run or ride at Lunch Loops or Loma. Since my husband and I love to climb, we also frequent Unaweep Canyon for some climbing!
For further out adventures, we love taking our visitors to Ouray or Telluride for some camping and hiking.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would credit my journey to becoming a postpartum doula to Julia Jones from Newborn Mothers. I listened to her podcast religiously when I was pregnant with my first baby, and her perspective and priorities that she shared about motherhood really impacted me on my journey of becoming a mom, and caring
for other mommas.
