We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Close and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa Close, every day, we talk about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Well I guess the name originated when I met my husband. He had a business appropriately named Close to Nature. So when I started doing photography and painting rocks I adopted the name. I love photography. In particular I love capturing candid images and nature scenes. And I’ve always loved rocks! So it seems like a good fit, because the photography ties in with the rocks.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always had an eye for beauty. I found a photograph of myself when I was 3 carrying my Dad’s Brownie camera. Recently I found some drawings my Dad had created when he was young. I guess I inherited his creativity. I studied graphic design and photography in college and knew that’s what I wanted to do for a career. Each of my mandala designs is one of a kind because I paint on unique hand-selected Colorado rocks. I prefer using authentic rocks because of their unusual asymmetrical shapes, and I adapt the designs to the shape of the rocks which distinguishes them from one another. They are triple glazed with a protective waterproof coating, so they are durable enough to be left outdoors. I can see my mandala rocks decorating flower beds all over the state and beyond. Hopefully this article will help me accomplish that goal!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am totally an outdoor person. I love to hike with my golden retriever Monte, run, workout, and spend time outdoors. I actually have a friend coming this June and I’ve been searching to find out what’s going on locally. One place I would love to take her is Red Rocks Amphitheater to see a show. I’ve heard that it’s unbelievable! I think she would also enjoy going to the downtown area of Colorado Springs to explore. Terra Verde to shop is a great place to explore and love to try all the new restaurants. The Garden of The Gods is my favorite place because of all the rock formations. Joyful Journeys Hotsprings in Moffat, CO is absolutely wonderful. Just too many places to list them all, We live in such an amazing place!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Gary is extremely supportive. He has become a vital team member. He’s involved in the extremely important prep work and helps with picking out the authentic Colorado rocks. He has a wonderful creative eye.
