We had the good fortune of connecting with Shay Koloff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shay, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson that my business has taught me is that support of strangers can surprise you! When I became an herbalist it was for the sake of helping myself and my family but as my passion grew so did the customers and the amount of people who believed in my work & our mission to help others began to grow and became a community. I will always be grateful for the people I am able to help because of my passion!

What should our readers know about your business?
I started my business Zenith Moon Co. originally back in 2019. When I moved to Colorado in 2020 my brand expanded and took off with our herbalism approach and since has been flourishing. In 2022 we opened a store front called The Broom Circle Holistic Healing & Tea Room to serve our community and it’s been a successful year of business. We are different from other holistic store & herbal apothecaries because we specialize in custom blending. You will find that our store doesn’t cater to the one size fit all narrative: we seek to help our customers individually down to the blend specifically for their needs and to be sure we are not making remedies that “generalize mass target issues” for our customers by assuming one master blend for a certain ailment will fix everyone’s issues.

It was not easy opening a business. I had many local businesses try to stop me, others who did not believe in me, and challenges along the way that varied in the form of financial, and teamwork hurdles. I overcame my issues by taking each step at a time and scaling it down to an achievable size goal. By taking the bigger picture and breaking it down into smaller sections , it allowed me to see how to achieve each goal from step to step and not necessarily all at once.

Lessons that I have learned in this process of owning a business is patience and persistence. In order for a business to be successful you must maintain the patience to see each step through no matter how small or slow the progression might be. It’s important to stay committed to the process of building your business because it is with persistent tending to your goals that you will achieve them.

What I want people to know is that I am a self made entrepreneur who did not have assistance or help but that never stopped me. Our brand started with one person who never gave up on healing herself and all it takes is your one why to get you going. Many need to know that you can start a business with no prior degree, experience, or investment. Where this is a will, there is a way and the first step is believing in your vision.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots in the city would include Felipe’s 109 for best taco burgers, Rocky Mountain beignets for a delicious New Orleans treat, for drinks the Allusions Speakeasy is the perfect immersive experience, and of course Garden of the Gods is a must!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, when I first moved to Colorado I met the founder of Pikes Peak Permaculture, Becky Elder. I was immediately swallowed into the world of sustainable gardening and landscaping learning so much about our region and edible landscapes. In meeting them my passion for gardening and herbal remedies grew even more. I’m so thankful to them for the skills that I was able to learn and the experiences that I gained while actively serving the local neighborhood communities as a gardener.
