We had the good fortune of connecting with Lupita Carrasco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lupita, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I ever made was to take on the full time care of my mother who suffers from schizoaffective disorder. I was 24 years old at the time and already had two children. What made this decision so painful and complicated was my relationship growing up under my mothers care. The illness made her cruel and distant when I needed her support the most. Witnessing the horrific progression of my mothers illness as she essentially held hostage the family home in Mexico led to my decision. I am still her caregiver to this day and I now have seven children.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of my recent show “Expressions On Caring” which shares the daily struggles of my life as my mothers caregiver. It also touches on deep childhood trauma, and how my upbringing affects the way I view myself and interact with the world. It is my hope that this particular exhibit will find its way into more public spaces, such as hospitals or museums. I believe that shining light on this subject can bring awareness and give voice to many caregivers, struggling every day unseen by the world. Getting to where I am today has been so difficult. I come from a place where I lacked family support and was heavily burdened with responsibilities unrelated to art. Having no formal training I often felt as though I was grasping at straws, and was fearful of messing up opportunities. Eventually, I realized that the key to opening doors was to form relationships in the art community and show up for other artists as well. I want the world to see my art as an expression of beauty in all things ordinary, painful, and vulnerable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend to all my favorite green spaces and likely none of the peoply places. Cheyenne Mountain State Park, North Cheyenne Canyon, and the trails around Garden of the Gods are some of my favorite places to take in the natural beauty of Colorado Springs. we might hit up some of my favorite food trucks like la Flor de Jalisco and Conrads Jamaican fusion.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Colorado Springs art community and the collectors who have championed my work. I am eternally grateful.
