We had the good fortune of connecting with Katharine Hauge and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katharine, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After 16 years of working in outpatient orthopedics where we primarily billed insurance, I needed to remove myself from the constraints pushed on me by Medicare and commercial insurance companies. I never felt I had sufficient time with patients, and I couldn’t assess and treat the “whole” person. Now, I take as much time as I need and when someone comes in with an ankle injury I can fully explore factors up the chain as possible contributors to their injury.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I had a very strong foundation in orthopedics after 16 years of learning through others, taking countless continuing education classes and having mentors as well as mentoring. Starting my own business at that point allowed me to effectively broaden my reach to really treat the whole person and develop a thoughtful and long term plan for them. I want people to leave my office feeling really taken care of, and this is the feedback I get. I am in a private pay situation so I do not have insurance constraints. As long as I do my best to convey to people that I am “all in” at guiding them, they do return and send their friends, family members, neighbors. It has organically grown as a business and I am proud of that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That is easy because I live in a beautiful city. We would hike some of the amazing trails in Boulder County, we might rent electric bikes for the novelty of it and head directly west to some small towns like Jamestown, Nederland or Gold Hill. We would eat sushi at Hapa in downtown Boulder or one of the many locally owned restaurants nearby. We would take a drive into the mountains and eat at Roy’s Last Shot near Rollinsville and then hike nearby at Golden Gate State Park. We would look for some live music somewhere locally and also see what was playing (documentaries or indie films) at The Dairy Center for the Arts. Lastly, we would definitely wander through CU campus and maybe see music at Macky Auditorium or the Grusin Hall.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people who have helped me elevate my game but I especially appreciate Dr Elizabeth Yurth of the Boulder Longevity Institute. She is nothing short of genius and digs very deep into her patients’ issues. She looks for long term solutions for them, and this is what I try to do as well. She is not satisfied with mediocre answers for her patients. She is thoughtful and prepared in her interactions and this helps me do my best for my patients as well.
