We had the good fortune of connecting with Bethany Gill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bethany, what role has risk played in your life or career?
By nature, I am not a risk taker. Sometimes though, risk finds you and you have no choice but to leap. In 2018 I suddenly became a single mom after being a wife, stay-at-home mom, and homeschooler for over 11 years. I was facing a future with three young children on my own with very little work-related skills and no significant work history. I was determined to be able to continue homeschooling my children and was unrelenting in my devotion to being with them as much as possible. It was a huge risk to start my own business. I was told by the court system, by my ex, my friends even, that it was an unsafe and unwise decision. But I knew it was my best option for an income that also gave me the freedom to be the mom that I had committed to being so many years ago. I started small, working multiple jobs to make ends meet, and eventually in the last 6 years grew my business to be what fully supports my family. There have been risks inside of risks, with pivoting in the business, clients that didn’t work out, paving my own way in a digital world that has opportunities beyond comprehension, and learning new ways to balance mom life, work-life, and now relationship life. All my risks have paid off every single time. I either moved forward, or I learned.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been creative since I can remember. When I decided to start my own business, I didn’t recognize creativity as a skill I could utilize in the business world though. Originally, I started as a Virtual Assistant for small businesses. I was creating spreadsheets and updating websites all day every day. It was financially stable, but it was mind-numbing. I’m not sure when I realized that I enjoyed social media creation, but at some point, I noticed that creating content was really fun. I started slowly spreading my skills to creating digital products for companies, realtors, birthday parties, etc. All the while, I was working in my own time on writing and creating products under my name. In 2023 I decided to take another leap, pivot slightly, and slowly start releasing my own products. I started with a year-long prayer and Bible journal, which launched me into creating an online community called Room at the Table, more digital products and t-shirts, and a podcast for Christian women. I think what sets me apart is a combination of what I offer, and what I’ve been through. Being a strong Christian woman and walking through a difficult divorce sent waves through my life. But it has also allowed me to connect with other hurting women of all backgrounds and walks of life. It’s allowed me to love others where they are, and provide products that help them walk through their own combination of hurt and healing. Room at the Table was created as a virtual community for women to come, have a seat at the table, and know they are welcomed and loved just as they are. Muddy boots and all. It’s been an incredibly difficult road, but it’s paved the way for immense blessings and opportunities, and for that I will always be thankful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a Western Slope girlie. Grand Junction knows how to live well, that’s for sure. I, however, am in the minority, and I’m not a big outdoorsy person. While I do like the occasional hike, that is definitely not how I would spend my free time. I’m more about small-town charm, supporting small businesses, and enjoying people’s company. So, for a good time, I’d start with a walk downtown in Fruita to get coffee at the absolute best coffee shop: Bestslope Coffee. Then we’d walk around, hitting a couple of local shops for unique shopping and lunch at Pablo’s Pizza. Then we’d head “into town” to Grand Junction for more downtown shopping and dinner at Taco Party. Typically, when people visit me, my itinerary is centered around food, so other days would include heading to Palisade for dinner and drinks at the Palisade Brewery, or pastries at Sweet Kiwi. If you visit during the right time of year, I’ll happily drag you along for a weekend trip to one of Fruita’s festival’s or one of several farmer’s markets in the valley. Eventually, we’ll have to make our way to Palisade Rim for one of my favorite hikes in in Grand Junction and then drinks at Moody’s. Some of my random stops include the karaoke bar by the airport, and variety shows at Cavalcade Fruita. I like to go where the people are, and where they’re being their most authentic self.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could create a list a mile long of people to thank. But first and foremost, my parents. They have always been my biggest supporters. From providing help with my kids, to financially backing endeavors, to daily prayer cover, my parents have filled in more gaps than I can count. They never doubted I could do it and have celebrated my every step forward. I couldn’t have done it without my biggest driving force: my kids. Everything I do is for them and they are my biggest cheerleaders (and sometimes my most honest critics). And my church family. My friends and loved ones who have held me up every step of the way, supported and encouraged through the darkest and most difficult days. They showed up when I needed them and I will forever be thankful for every one of them. And last but not least, my main man, who never makes me feel like too much, but encourages every new adventure I step into.
