Meet Liz Harrington | Anxious Attachment Coach and Hypnotherapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Harrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
There are a lot of misconceptions around alternative healing, but especially hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Most people were first exposed to hypnosis when they were in middle school, and a stage hypnotist got one of their classmates to dance like a chicken or something equally silly. While that is a form of hypnosis, it’s not what is used in the therapeutic setting. Also, many people believe that hypnosis is a form of mind control or you can get stuck in hypnosis. In actuality, hypnosis is a completely voluntary state. In fact, that classmate likely was both a volunteer and the class clown!
Hypnosis is actually a very relaxing, safe, focused state of being where you are more suggestible. We all go through forms of hypnosis all day long. When you’re waking up in the morning, taking a long walk, driving on the highway, and a very relevant example nowadays – scrolling on Instagram! Those advertisers figured out a long time ago that they could plant products into our minds by taking advantage of when we’re in a trance like state (watching television is a form of hypnosis too!)
The beauty of being able to use hypnosis intentionally and therapeutically is that you have more access to your subconscious mind, which is where all of our beliefs, habits, patterns, memories, and emotional responses are stored. A trained Hypnotherapist can guide a client into identifying the root of his or her problems by exploring the subconscious mind and then inserting a new, positive belief to help to overwrite the outdated neural pathways. These neural networks in our subconscious minds and are responsible for the majority of our issues – whether it’s self sabotaging behaviors, bad habits, or negative relationship patterns. Many people attempt to talk their way our of their problems using logic or traditional talk therapy, which only goes so far when the root of their issue lives in their subconscious.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have a private coaching practice where I integrate hypnosis to help women heal Anxious Attachment wounds. It’s very niche! For those that are not familiar with Anxious Attachment, very simplistically, you can think of it as relationship anxiety. I’ve coached women since 2020, but I originally started off as a Health Coach. About two years in, I realized that my true passion was in the relationship space, as I had gone through my own personal relationship struggles, had made huge strides in my own healing, and was inspired to share my unique methodology with others.
My biggest aha as I created my coaching program was that most of our issues involving relationships are beliefs and coping mechanisms that were formed when we were children – and actually have been wired into our subconscious minds. Many of us operate on these outdated belief systems in adult relationships, which leads to irrational thinking, unhelpful behavioral patterns, and a tendency towards unhealthy relationships. Because of that, I found that the use of hypnosis, which is a subconscious healing technique, was wildly effective and so much faster than traditional talk therapy, which primarily only targets the conscious mind.
For me, my business and audience really started to grow after a few things. One, I committed to consistently sharing educational content to help spread my message, attract new clients and build credibility. Secondly, I decided to really own my story and share vulnerably about my challenges. Many people have shared that they are attracted to my work because they relate to me and my story. I believe that the world of coaching is changing dramatically right now, and people are really attracted to authenticity and realness above all. People want to feel like they know you and they’re connected to you before hiring you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh gosh! This is such a tough question because there are so many possibilities in Colorado! Some people think it’s a hot take, but I actually think Denver has amazing sushi – I would say Sushi Den is my favorite. Of course, I would bring them to a brewery; I love Our Mutual Friend in RiNO or Zuni Street Brewing. Other favorite beverage spots include Death & Co, Vin Rouge Wine Bar, and the recently opened bar at Jaques.
I also love spending time at the parks and following up with an iced oat milk latte – two of my favorite combinations are City Park and Honey Hill Cafe and Washington Park and Steam Espresso Bar.
Outside of the city, I would absolutely recommend a roadtrip to one of the amazing mountain towns. My personal favorite is Telluride, but for a shorter trip, Crested Butte is also incredible and feels more remote than some of the other destinations closer to Denver.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
While I’ve been lucky to have had so many influential leaders and support systems in my life, I can’t not shout out my own mom! Not only did my mom join me in getting certified as a Hypnotherapist in 2022 (she has been interested in alternative healing for as long as I can remember!), but she has been instrumental in supporting me in following my dreams. My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader, which allowed me to pursue my true passions with confidence, even though they are definitely a bit unique! Most recently, I quit my corporate job of nine years to take my practice full time, and my mom has shown up with unwavering support every step of the way!
