We had the good fortune of connecting with Claire Click and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Claire, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was working in healthcare during the pandemic, and it was, of course, extremely taxing emotionally. I craved autonomy and, honestly, the ability to work from home. I already had a lot of experience with customer service, social media, and marketing – so taking it freelance as a VA was a natural fit for me!

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a sole proprietor, or freelance, Virtual Assistant. I’m what I like to call a “flexible task VA.” I’ve never niched down to one specific service, or even one specific type of client. I work in a pretty diverse range of industries right now and I learn something new daily. Usually more than one thing!

There are certainly benefits to niching down, but I find that I can take pieces of lessons I’ve learned in one task, and apply it to another, or with one client, and apply it to another… so I think it really helps me to level up more quickly.

Freelancing or owning your own business of course comes with challenges. You lose a client and wonder if everything will come crumbling down, for example. But working healthcare during the pandemic really taught me resilience. And rebuilding after that trauma showed me how strong I can be!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My hometown of Quincy, Illinois has really added a lot of fabulous stuff to the mix in recent years. I’d definitely want to start with coffee at Bailey’s Coffeehouse. Their dirty chai is the BEST I have ever had and their customer service is phenomenal! We have kayak rentals down on the river I’d love to try, but haven’t yet, so that would need to be on the agenda. If we needed to do some work, Quincy Public Library is my go to. Then, we could get some pre dinner drinks at Quincy Brewing Company or Joker’s Lounge, and dinner at Dunnbelly (I don’t eat meat, and their veggie of the day NEVER disappoints. Plus, they have a great wine selection and fun cocktails.) Oh, and they would be closed by this time, but if by some miracle they were open … dessert would need to be a chocolate chip cookie from Calftown Coffeehouse!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The course I took, 90 Day VA, was a game changer for my trajectory. It gave me more of a vision and blueprint for what I wanted my life as a VA to look like, and the tools to help me get there.

My first paying retainer client, Michelle Puccinelli, was also an integral part of my journey to becoming a full time Virtual Assistant. She took a chance on me when I had little experience and has taught. me so much as we’ve grown together. I’m so grateful for her!
