We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Hindman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I moved around a lot growing up because of my Dad’s job. I think having to settle in a new city and meet new friends helped me to be a bit more of an extrovert and relate to people better. But it also instilled a wanderlust in me that has made me love traveling. I’m very fortunate to have a job where I get to see so much of the world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was really lucky to have some fantastic people take a chance on me early in my photography career which helped get me to where I am today. Along the way, I’ve always tried to challenge myself to shoot better images and improve my technical skills. As a photographer, most of my work is in the luxury travel world, working for high-end hotels and resorts. It’s an interesting combination of architecture, landscape and lifestyle photography. It’s never boring: some days I get to work with models on the beach, while the next I might spend hours obsessively moving furniture around in a lobby getting everything perfectly aligned (who knew that OCD could be a life skill?) With my work, no two days are ever the same, and that makes it exciting to get out of bed every morning.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places in the world to shoot is in Italy. Between the landscapes, the food and the culture, its amazing! Because of that, one of my favorite places to eat in Denver has to be Coperta in uptown. This is a bold statement, but their Cacio e pepe rivals anything you’ll find in Rome… plus their Negronis are pretty amazing. I LOVE the area around Union Station and I think its a can’t miss. As a photographer, the late afternoon light inside the great hall always makes for great photos. Nearby you’ve got so many great places: Terminal Bar; Pig Train Coffee for a little caffinated pick-me-up; Tavernetta right next to the train tracks (another great Italian restaurant with with one of my favorite spots for happy hours).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of the support and positive encouragement of so many people in my life. From my Dad who always made time for me and encouraged me to pursue my interests growing up, to my wife Tracy who’s helped support my creative journey along the way, to so many great photographers who’ve been so open along the way sharing their knowledge and expertise. As a way of saying thanks, I try to make a point to “pay it forward” and help out other aspiring photographers. I’ve always loved the saying “A rising tide raises all ships.” Helping them is a way to help rise the tide and make us all a little bit better.
