We had the good fortune of connecting with Wyn Ferrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We started Mile High Spirits in 2011 to change the landscape of the Colorado beverage industry. When we started in 2010 Denver had an impressive brewery scene that was evolving fast and getting attention on a national stage. We wanted to bring Colorado spirits to this conversation as well, but we wanted to do it in a fun way. The brewing industry is full of collaboration and camaraderie while the spirits industry seems to be serious as producers stay guarded. We wanted to be different, we wanted to break the mold that was defining spirits as “stuffy” and “pretentious”. One of the main ways that we accomplish this is by having a tasting room that lives our company motto – We take our spirits seriously, but not ourselves. This has led our tasting room to be a whiskey-forward tasting lounge with tours and yard games during the day, and a fun warehouse dance party on weekend nights. We started Mile High Spirits to be different and to have fun while we build the best spirits production company in the country.

What should our readers know about your business?
At Mile High Spirits we strive to produce the highest quality products possible while having fun doing it. This has led to us winning an impressive collection of awards while retaining a phenomenal team that is producing better products than anyone else. That is not to say that there weren’t challenges along the way, and that there aren’t major challenges ahead. The largest challenge for any up-and-coming brand is navigating the waters of an industry that is dominated by multi-billion dollar competitors who have remarkable control over our distributors’ behavior and priorities. Our strategy is to offer products and pricing that distributors and accounts can’t say “no” to and so far it is working!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend come into town for a week I would want to do some exploring. From the airport, I would head to Federal Blvd for some Dim Sum before a big night at one of Denver’s great music venues (Red Rocks, Mission, Ogen, Cervantes). The next morning we would head up the hill to enjoy the mountains for a few days in the Vail/Beaver Creek area since we don’t have enough time to get to Telluride. We can eat at some of my favorite spots like The Craftsman, Moutain Standard, Ti Amo, and Juniper after grabbing beers at local breweries in the valley. Now that we have our hiking/skiing fix I would take us back down to Denver with a quick stop at Central City (it is a business opportunity, after all) and come down to eat our way through this great city. The mornings would start with Urban Egg, Snooze, and One Fold to fuel us up for trips to Boulder, RR, and Estes Park. The evenings would be spent at places like Lucina, Super Mega Bien, 7 Grand, A5, and Uchi. For the final weekend with a friend, we would hit the town starting with a Rockies, Avs, or Nuggest Game before we hit the nightlife, ultimately ending up at Mile High Spirits in Downtown Denver

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to all the amazing individuals who have worked for us over the years. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Building a company begins with people, and our foundation has always been strong.

I also want to express gratitude to my wife Chelsea, the spouses and partners of my staff, and my business partners. Our industry can be hectic and they are the backbone supporting the efforts of our large team.
