We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Mcmichael (formerly Shigley) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandi, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started my business in 1999 at the age of 23, I was full of energy and eager to push forward. I was constantly on the move, embracing every opportunity to grow my fashion business. As a DIY fashion enthusiast before the industry made it easier to start your own business, I was breaking new ground and always learning.

Now, at 49, I’ve realized that I no longer have the energy to keep going at that same relentless pace. Instead, I’ve shifted my focus to what I know best. I’ve learned that to sustain my passion and creativity, I need to refuel my battery. The energy I expend in my work is significant, and I’ve come to appreciate the importance of balancing that with time to recharge.

To maintain this balance, I often go camping to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Sometimes, I simply remove myself from social situations and make a point to be still. These moments of stillness and connection with nature allow me to reset and return to my work with renewed energy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m the founder of Fashion Denver, an organization that’s been supporting our local fashion community for 20 years. Over the years, Fashion Denver has gone through many phases—from consulting and fashion event production to running a boutique, emceeing events, and even creating a fashion camp for kids. Currently, we’re focused on covering and promoting local events and fashion camps. This year is particularly special as we’re celebrating our 20-year anniversary with a fashion market!

In addition to Fashion Denver, I’m the executive producer of CreativeMornings / DEN, where I organize monthly events in unique venue spaces, featuring different speakers. CreativeMornings is part of a global community with over 230 chapters, and each month, all the chapters explore a theme chosen by one chapter somewhere in the world. It’s a fantastic way to bring our creative community together.

I also serve as the Communications Director for The Lion Project, a nonprofit that supports other nonprofits through video storytelling. This year, our focus is on building food and necessity markets in low-income Denver schools.

What sets me apart is my ability to wear different hats across these roles. Over the past 25 years, I’ve developed a diverse skill set that allows me to juggle these different responsibilities.

I’m most excited about watching the next generation of young entrepreneurs build their businesses—it’s inspiring and energizing.

My journey has been shaped by doing the work that needs to be done, even when I didn’t initially seek it out. I’ve learned to overcome challenges by seeing them as opportunities to learn, and I’ve also learned the importance of knowing when to say no and even when to stop.

The biggest lesson I continue to learn is to focus on what’s essential and let go of the rest. I want the world to know that nothing is impossible without faith and without God. He’s equipped us with unique skills and qualities to live life to the fullest!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I’d start right on our block because we’ve got some of the coolest spots around!

First up, for tacos, we’d hit La Diabla on a Wednesday for their fantastic 2 tacos and margarita deal. Then on another day for lunch, we’d swing by Mexico City Tacos for the ultimate fried taco experience. For a laid-back evening, I’d take them to the Whiskey Bar—this place has a rich history and is perfect for enjoying a great drink.

On Tuesday, we’d grab a $7 Margherita pizza at Maro’s, which is always a delicious treat. After soaking up the local flavor, we’d head out for a camping adventure to escape the city. I’d pick a spot near a river where we can unwind and enjoy some serene natural beauty.

It’s all about mixing local favorites with a bit of outdoor fun!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my Shoutout to my amazing husband, Patrick, who promised in his wedding vows to be my “navigator and sidekick in all of life’s adventures”—and let’s just say, he’s kept that promise with flying colors! And, of course, a big shoutout Jesus, who is my trusty compass, always pointing me in the right direction. With Patrick by my side and my Lord guiding the way, life’s adventures are pretty dang amazing, even in the rough spots!
