We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett, what do you attribute your success to?
I truly believe that the factor behind our success is a people first mentality. We couldn’t do what we do without the team we’ve assembled, and continue to build upon. I know companies say this all the time. Heck, I’ve been told this at every company I’ve worked for, but I was always taught that actions speak louder than words. We truly live and breathe this concept throughout all of our companies. We have an “either we all succeed or none of us succeed” mindset and that to me is what attracts the people we partner with and has led to our success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
If I had to choose one thing that I’m most proud of I’d have to say it’s believing in myself. I believe that’s also what I’m most excited about. I’ve been in business development now for 22 years and a lot of people talk about starting their own business, however I learned that very few will for a variety of reasons. I think this is also what sets me apart. I’ve always fallen back on the fact that I know deep down I can out work anyone, and that’s something within my control.
I got to where I am today with hard work, the mindset that I don’t know everything, and networking my butt off with anybody and everybody. I’ve always been fascinated with peoples’ stories and learning something from each person I meet. No, this was not always easy. I’ve been at rock bottom more than once in my life. I lost my mother in 2010 and it crushed me. My father & step mother picked me up to move back home at the age of 28 with nothing more than my dog (Chip), a dresser, and a few clothes..
I overcame the challenges simply by continuing to believe in myself and an amazing family that loves me no matter what. I also look back at my darkest days, and without my dog (Chip) I’m not certain I’d be typing this interview out right now.
I learned so many lessons that there’s probably not enough paper to capture them all. Here’s a few of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned along the way. 1. Hold yourself accountable for what you say you’re going to do. Your word is a lot of times all you have. 2. Don’t judge people, everyone has a story. Treat everyone with the same respect no matter their position. 3. Learn something from everything and everybody. Some of the best lessons I’ve ever learned were from the people or experiences I never expected. 4. Learn the platinum rule. We’ve all heard of the golden rule; Treat others the way you’d want to be treated. However I now live by the platinum rule; Treat others the way they want to be treated.
What I’d want the world to know is simple. Be a good human with an open mind to other perspectives. We all have our opinions and beliefs, but being open to different perspectives, whether you agree or not, is how you continue to grow. As far as from a company standpoint, I’d say the world needs to know we challenge the norms in business. I always ask the team “why not” first, before ruling out an idea. If corporate life isn’t for you, there’s plenty of opportunities out there. Ultimately, I’d say it’s about believing in yourself. Jobs will always be there, but taking a leap of faith could be life changing not only for you, but others around you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a loaded question as Denver and Colorado in general has so many amazing things to do. Here’s what I’d say.
– Red Rocks Concert
– Play golf at Bear Dance
– Hike at least 3 days in different spots. There’s too many amazing hikes to choose from but 100% we’d hit Garden of the Gods and Deer Creek Canyon (This place holds a special spot in both my life and my best friends life with our dog’s Chip & Cubbie)
– Hike a 14er
– Make sure we spent a day in a mountain town (Breckenridge, Steamboat, or Vail)
– Eat at Robert’s Italian Deli in Littleton, sushi at Sushi Den, and a cocktail at one of the amazing speak easies.
Is that enough? I think I could go on forever with this one!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
