Meet Jonathan White | Automotive Repair Shop Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonathan, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Running an automotive repair shop is far more complex than most outsiders realize. Beyond just fixing cars, shop owners must navigate a range of financial, technical, and operational challenges that can make or break their business.
One of the biggest hurdles is overhead costs. Rent, utilities, insurance, and payroll add up quickly, putting constant pressure on the business to maintain profitability. Additionally, tooling and equipment expenses are substantial, as modern vehicles require specialized diagnostic tools and updated software to properly diagnose and repair issues. Staying current with the latest technology is not optional—it’s essential for keeping up with ever-evolving vehicle systems.
Another often-overlooked challenge is workforce management. Skilled technicians are in high demand, but hiring and retaining experienced professionals can be difficult. The industry faces a shortage of trained mechanics, and continuous education is necessary to keep up with new automotive advancements. A well-balanced team requires a mix of seasoned technicians and apprentices, but finding that balance can be a constant struggle.
Finally, modern vehicle technology adds another layer of complexity. Today’s cars are essentially computers on wheels, with intricate systems like CAN bus networks controlling everything from engine performance to safety features. While technology has made vehicles more advanced, it has also made diagnosing and repairing them more difficult. Information on fixing these systems can sometimes be scarce or proprietary, forcing repair shops to rely on expensive subscriptions to manufacturer databases or specialized training.
In short, running an automotive repair shop isn’t just about turning wrenches—it requires financial acumen, technical expertise, and strong leadership to keep everything running smoothly.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career in the automotive repair industry has been a journey filled with challenges, growth, and a deep commitment to excellence. I run Phil’s Pro Auto, a business that has been proudly serving the community for over 40 years. Founded by my father, Phil White, our shop was built on strong values, quality workmanship, and customer service that goes above and beyond. Today, with over 742 Google reviews and a 4.8-star rating, I take immense pride in continuing that legacy and pushing our business to even greater heights.
What sets us apart is not just our technical expertise but also the culture and trust we’ve built with our customers. The automotive repair industry is constantly evolving, with new vehicle technology, complex systems like CAN bus networks, and increasing costs for tools and equipment. Staying ahead means investing in ongoing education, top-tier diagnostics, and creating a workplace where skilled technicians can thrive. Through mentorship from Shop Fix, I’ve been able to refine our operations, ensuring long-term profitability and sustainability while maintaining the high standards set by my father.
Personally, one of my biggest hurdles has been growing as a leader—learning to delegate responsibility rather than trying to handle everything myself. Transitioning from being hands-on with repairs to managing and leading a team was a challenge, but it was necessary for the business to scale. It is still something I’m working on and will continue to work on.
Looking back, I’ve learned that success in this industry isn’t just about fixing cars—it’s about building relationships, adapting to change, and fostering a strong team. The world should know that Phil’s Pro Auto is more than just a repair shop; it’s a family business built on honesty, integrity, and a relentless drive to provide the best service possible. I’m excited about the future—continuing to grow, improve, and serve our customers with the same dedication that started it all.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to dedicate my shoutout to my father, Phil White, who started this business 40 years ago. He not only laid the foundation for the company but also instilled the values, work ethic, and principles that continue to shape our operations today. His dedication, vision, and perseverance built the strong pillars that still serve as the backbone of our business. Without his efforts and commitment, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
I also owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to my wife, Melissa White. She has been my rock through this journey, helping me grow both personally and professionally. Whether it was providing honest feedback when I sought it, keeping me grounded during tough times, or simply supporting me through the long hours, late nights, and weekends at the shop, she has always been there. Her patience, understanding, and unwavering support have been invaluable, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her by my side.
In addition to my father’s influence, I want to recognize the coaching and mentorship from Shop Fix, which has been instrumental in taking our business to the next level. While my father built a solid foundation, Shop Fix provided me with the tools, strategies, and insights to expand upon that structure, ensuring long-term profitability and sustainability. Their guidance has helped refine our processes, improve efficiency, and navigate the complexities of running a modern automotive repair shop.
Beyond that, I owe a great deal of gratitude to our dedicated team of employees, whose hard work and commitment allow us to continue serving our customers with excellence. A successful business isn’t just about leadership—it’s about the collective effort of an entire team working together toward a shared vision.
Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge our loyal customers and community, who have supported us through the years. Their trust and continued business are what keep us moving forward, and we strive every day to provide them with the best service possible.
Success is never a solo journey, and I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has played a part in ours!
