We had the good fortune of connecting with AJ Gallegos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi AJ, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a native of Colorado, hunting and fishing has been in my blood since a young child. When I became a Barber 20 years ago I learned quickly that a Barbershop is a place of camaraderie, sports, and stories about hunting and fishing. So combining fly fishing to my barbershop really just meshed organically. We now have a full service Barbershop connected to a fly shop, a fishing club and a non profit fly fishing organization for inner city youth.

What should our readers know about your business?
My Barbershop is a full service shop serving some of the freshest cuts in Colorado. We’re a small 4 chair shop where we believe in quality, affordability and customer service. My shop is linked to the Canyon Fly Shop ran by my friend and business partner, Matt Sandor. We’re the only business partnership of this kind and we’re the only Barbershop in the world where you can walk in, get a haircut and also get a Colorado fishing license as we have a partnership with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would recommend booking a fly fishing trip with The Canyon Fly Shop. Whenever I have new friends visiting our city I take them to the one and only, Columbine Steakhouse. A true Denver staple. I also recommend hitting the slopes and going for a hike. If you have time in your trip, you have to visit the majestic southern Colorado also known as the San Luis Valley.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe everything and more to my parents. My mom Felicia Gallegos who is a Master Barber of 40 years who has been my biggest supporter and my mentor, my father Anthony Gallegos Sr who instilled in me many values. He taught me how to fish, hunt and be a father. Lastly my girlfriend Denise Lopez who has always believed in me and my career as a Barber and continues to push me to reach for new heights.
