We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Kingry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My husband and I started Yellow Paddle 16 years ago. My husband was shooting weddings and he had been working with some incredible second shooters who didn’t have the skills or desire to do all that was required to have a successful photography business, they just wanted to be creative and shoot weddings. We began to promote and manage clients for them and from there Yellow Paddle Photography was born. We had also experienced first hand the challenge of planning a wedding on a budget and we decided early on that we wanted to offer an affordable wedding photography service to Colorado. We wanted to work with couples that shared our same desire to have a great product that did not blow the budget. With these two pillars, providing support for photographers and offering affordable photography, we have built our small business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our business is unique because instead of just focusing on the client and the product of wedding photos, we are able to also focus on each photographer. We showcase who they are, their specific personality and style. We encourage a diverse team that can service a dynamic range of couples.
Our team began with 3 photographers, mostly students who were growing in their craft and showed extreme talent. Over the years we have welcomed photographers from all walks and stages of life and career. From the student photographers to professionals that just want to work in more of a team environment.
One of the challenges has been a lot of the national companies that have come into the Colorado market with a similar concept, but no connection with the Colorado wedding world. Others might have a similar concept but really use photographers to simply shoot and then they take over from there to post edit everything to be the same look and feel. The challenge has been trying to talk about our connection to Colorado and our desire to highlight the photographer and their style and skills. It is often hard to get out from the shadow of national competitors.
We are thankful for so many of the truly local vendors we get to work with and support. The local, personal connections in this industry make it all worth while.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have had the honor of representing hundreds of talented photographers over the years. As much as we have loved promoting and managing these talented folks, we know that they are the backbone of Yellow Paddle. It is their talent and love for their craft that has made our business possible.
