We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Sarah Ceschin, PT, DPT and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Sarah, what principle do you value most?
In both my personal and professional life, I really value active listening. I grew up sitting around my kitchen table with my entire family sharing stories, having conversations, and engaging in debates about all sorts of topics from politics to whether a hot dog should be considered a sandwich. My grandma was a great conversationalist, and it was because she knew how to listen to someone’s words before chiming in with her own opinions. She would say all the time, “the art of conversation lies in listening.” To this day, her words inspire me, and it is something I bring to my practice as a healthcare provider. You can learn so much about someone’s pain, their injury, and the treatment that will work best for them just by listening. It is not always easy, as you start to create thoughts in your own head while you process other’s words. However, with practice and time, you can provide an incredible service, relationship, and healing power with just listening.

What should our readers know about your business?
Boulder Sports Physiotherapy is a physical therapy practice I started in 2020 (great time for a small business, ey?). With my private practice, I focus on healing orthopedic, sports medicine injuries in the active population. What sets me apart from other physical therapy clinics is my ability to spend one-on-one time with my patients for a full hour. All of my patients receive 100% attention from a Doctor of Physical Therapy, regular (and free) check-ins via phone or email, as well as personalized care with home exercise programs or return to sport training schedules. Also, because it is my private practice I am able to explore other avenues of patient education and healthcare through free or low price events for my community. Over the past year, I organized a variety of events to run clubs, students, and businesses offering education on topics related to running and injury prevention as well as free treatment or consultations for those with current injuries. I love making connections and collaborating with others as it ultimately creates the “team” environment we all want to be a part of in our community. Has it been hard to start my business? Well, in the words of my own father, “Does a 50lb bag of flour make a big biscuit?” Everyday brings something new, something challenging, or something stressful. However, I am a firm believer that if you are bored in your career, then you are not doing it right. In fact, I have gained an incredible amount of confidence in myself personally and professionally since becoming a business owner. You learn the legal aspect of business, how to effectively communicate with others, how to carry yourself professionally while also having fun along the way. AND – most importantly – you learn balance, which is something I’ve never been great at doing, but over the past year have really understood. I know my limits and understand that it’s okay to have down time or time away from “work.” Your family and personal needs are so important, and your business will suffer if you don’t give energy to yourself first. I want the world to know that Boulder Sports Physiotherapy isn’t just a place to do band exercises for a few weeks and feel sore. Boulder Sports Physiotherapy is a place to become better, become stronger, and become inspired. I spend most of my time educating patients about why their injury has occurred and how we will use their body to fix the issue. Most of the time, my patients are improving past what they thought was their “baseline” because no other practitioner thought it could be better. My business may have the word “sports” in the name, but in no way does that mean you have to be an “athlete” or “active” to come see me. Each person moves in their own way and for their own reason. Maybe it’s to be a competitive runner, a triathlete, go bouldering in the mountains, play the guitar, or roll on the ground with their grandchildren. All movement matters and everyone deserves to find how their body is supposed to move towards a better, happier, pain free life. At Boulder Sports Physiotherapy, you will be pain free today, and moving for life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friends were coming to visit, I would go straight from the airport to the mountains. Well, after making a quick pit stop at VooDoo Doughnuts in Denver and picking up a breakfast burrito from a local restaurant along the way. I am from Wisconsin, so the mountains are something that will always be amazing to me and are worth showing off to my family and friends. I would pack a tent and sleeping bags because there is no better way to be in the mountains than camping. We would drive down to Leadville or up to Steamboat, as these are two of my favorite places to experience nature, culture, and meet neat people. After a night or two in the mountains, we could come back to the city and explore the culture and diversity of Denver. I would take them to Snooze in Union Station for breakfast or to Hamburger Mary’s for a Drag Brunch (my favorite), walk around the city and see the parks, capitol, etc. THEN – get ready for a night out starting at a brewery in Rino, dinner downtown (of their choosing – its not all about me=]), and then dancing at Lodo’s. OH – and we’d have to stop at Swanky’s for cheese curds and an adult slushy because #Wisconsin. Last, but not least, time must be saved for going to Little Man Ice cream, the Denver Zoo, and a hike in Chautauqua Park. We better make this a week-long trip – that’s quite the itinerary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people over the past few years who deserve kudos for my success, as I have needed much encouragement, support, and reminders to keep going throughout this process. Thank you SOOO much to the following humans:

1. My parents. They are the best support system anyone could ask for, and I am extremely lucky to call them my parents.
2. Kate Ripley. My colleague, work wife, and friend. She has been in business for years and is the strong, independent, amazing woman entrepreneur that inspires me everyday.
3. Hannah Sutter-Balke. Someone I met in PT school and has become one of my closest friends and colleagues. She continues to challenge me, and gain confidence as a person and practitioner. AND she supports me through her amazing physical therapy platform – Phyx – which provides all the administrative work for independent physical therapists.
4. My husband Chris. He is there to support me, celebrate with me, cry with me, and be the devil’s advocate I don’t always ask for but need. I couldn’t go for my dreams without him, and he has been incredibly supportive through everything.
5. My friends – all of them. They support my business and are there for me always. I am just so lucky to have amazing friends whom I can also call family.
