We had the good fortune of connecting with Taiane Bozzay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taiane, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my cake business because I wanted to be my own boss and have more control over my career. I have always had a passion for baking, and starting my own business allowed me to turn that passion into a career. I enjoy the freedom and flexibility that comes with being an entrepreneur, and I’m excited to see where my business takes me in the future.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re an online cake shop serving the Denver, Colorado area specializing in custom, modern cakes and elegant sweets. Our cakes are made from scratch for every order with quality products and no preservatives or artificial flavorings.

Flavor is extremely important to us, so to ensure that we are delivering the best for you, we make our cake components in-house; from the sponge, fillings and jam to frosting. We prioritize balance and harmonious flavors. Cakes are coated with silky Swiss Merengue Buttercream. Our recipe has much lower sugar and butter content compared to other buttercreams (e.g. American buttercream), which makes our cakes less sweet and more flavor-driven.

When I started my cake business I thought that I just needed to focus on making delicious and beautiful cakes to be successful. I was wrong! Just like other entrepreneurs, I had to learn (and I am still learning) about marketing, sales, building relationships with customers and so much more. Some weeks I spend more time on administrative tasks than baking.

It’s tempting to negotiate on price with potential customers just to get one more sale, but I’ve had to learn to accept that I can’t appeal to every customer. Our cakes are made from scratch with high-quality ingredients and I like to spend time getting the details of each cake just right. If I compromise on price, I risk lowering my quality. It frustrates me sometimes, but I continue to remind myself to stay authentic to my values and brand.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love museums and I would take my friends to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Denver Art Museum, and the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Also, I would love to explore the city’s outdoor spaces like the Rocky Mountains, so we could enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and rock climbing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Madebyhandcakes would definitely not exist without my husband’s support. I’m the one who bakes all the cakes (for now), but I always like to say “we” because a business goes much further than only making the product and I know I am not alone in this. He helps with deliveries, financial and business advice, shopping when I am busy and manages our website.
