Meet Abigail Lubahn | Somatic Psychotherapist, Dance and Movement Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Lubahn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abigail, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Creative habits have been a major resource in my process of decerning whether to keep going or give up. Creating opening where there is room for insight, perspective shift and checking in with mentors, and colleagues. When I feel like giving up, I check in with my emotional state whether or not the choice brings me closer to connection or out of connection, with my work, community and my values. Often I find my perception of wanting to give up is usually an indicator that I need support, skills or collaboration. Sometimes the impulse to give up is about letting go of trying to force something to happen.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most proud of my somatic and dance movement therapy practice, Abigail Lubahn Somatics. It was not easy, it took risk, grit and patience. I am really grateful to be offering the work I have cultivated from working in many different circumstances, overnight shift, crisis work and many other odd jobs along the way. Now I am finding my stride and building my practice. I am so excited to have in person office with movement space to explore therapeutic process, sensory integration, embodiment practice, relationship skills and somatic psycho, emotional and spiritual support.
It took about 4 years to build the business side of things and is still growing which is exciting and at times scary. Every week I am more and more inspired and motivated to cultivate real, grounded and supported connections in the therapeutic journey.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ah this could be and endless list. Carolina Brizuela for recommending me to the Shout Out series. Part of taking the risk to start my own practice came from my clinical work over the years in mental health agencies, Outpatient treatment, non-profit psycho education like Golden Bridge in Boulder with Melissa Michaels AND the SomaSource community, my work in community dance and movement organizations like the United Capoeira Association Denver and Samba Colorado, Founder/Director, Kebrina Josefina de Jesús . Much of my experiences that have lead me to this point were through the relationships and impacts of being in community and connection. These soulful and movement based communities have supported me as touch stones of inspiration, beauty and supported creativity.
Gabrielle Roth has a quote “Do you have the discipline to be a free spirit?” This has been and organizing principle for my work.
