Meet Susannah Allen | Newborn, Family + Wedding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Susannah Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susannah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I used to work for CU. My boss was at the time was a serial entrepreneur when he wasn’t working at the university. He mentioned how easy it is to start a business in Colorado, and I knew I had to form my own LLC for photography. I had studied photography in college, had photographed a few weddings for friends, and loved photographing people, pets, and events. So it was a no-brainer.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I studied photography in college, back when digital was brand new. And that means I was still all film in college. To this day, I photograph several roles of film per month, and I love that. I love ripping open a roll of medium format film, winding it into my camera, the click the shutter makes. Film is definitely part of what makes photography exciting. And I am proud I still shoot it to this day.
I have certainly overcome challenges–trying to figure out how to revamp my business when my boys had just started school and weekends were so important to me. I didn’t want to miss out! Now that they’re older, that stress has dissipated somewhat. And I still photograph weddings, but squeeze in many family sessions during weekends!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
RiNo, hands down. I’d check out a few of the vintage store and grab a drink at Ratio Beerworks. And so long as my kids aren’t with me, I’d head to some of the art museums in Denver too: the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Grabbing a snack on the outdoor deck of MCA Denver is nice. It’s a relaxing space to chat with girlfriends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband. He encouraged me and was will to take a risk on not having a steady income. I appreciate his support and faith in me.
