Meet Mercedes Rouse | Cosmetologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mercedes Rouse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mercedes, why did you pursue a creative career?
I grew up with a grandmother who did hair for a living, she had her own salon in her basement. Through high school I tried nails and loved it but wasn’t ready to go back to school. In my late 20’s I worked as a habilitation worker for a young women with autism, while doing the job I did her hair for her and the smile on her face at the end of the day made it all worth it. I took the next step and went to cosmetology school.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is the biggest part of why I love what I do is simply seeing how a new style makes people feel. I have had happy tears in my chair, I have enjoyed laughter with my clients, it’s not all about the money is more about making someone look and feel absolutely fabulous. It’s been rough going out on to my own. I know it’s going to be well worth it in the end.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I just moved here myself, so I will be trying all the things. My favorite place to visit so far is manitou Springs, they have a ton of cute shops to visit

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have an amazing support system, my dad has always been my biggest supporter, and always pushed me to be the best that I can, he has always pushed me to be better than him. with out him I wouldn’t be who I am today. Recently my amazing mother in law and father in law have been pushing me to be the best that I can be, with out them I wouldn’t have been able to go off on my own and go into business with my mother in law. My husband has been the one to make all things possible he has supported me through school, through venturing off onto my own, and has over all supported every decision. He is truly my rock. I can’t just dedicate my success to one person.
