We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Arrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks can be a very scary endeavor, but sometimes in our lives, it’s absolutely necessary. There can be good and bad risks and for me, if the risk can lead to reward, then I am more incentivized to take it. I took a risk at the age of 29 by getting a divorce and thought at the time that it would be a negative label that would follow me for the rest of my life. It took time for me to see that I would not have been able to reach my personal and professional potential had I stayed in that marriage.

My next risk was packing up all my things and moving from Florida to Colorado in 2018. I always knew I wanted to move out of Florida but hadn’t quite found my future home until I had been to Denver a few times for work. Something about the environment made me feel like I was home and I quickly planned my move without a job lined up (talk about risky!). It all worked out and I was able to quickly find a job, make new friends, and enjoy my new state!

Finally, in 2021, I took a risk of leaving my 13 year career in healthcare to become a financial advisor. I had no experience in the industry, but knew that helping others and providing financial education would be a rewarding career that I could do the rest of my life. I started part-time in the industry to get trained and licensed and went full-time in 2022. It has definitely had it’s ups and downs, but I am so glad I took that chance and love what I do!

What should our readers know about your business?
Starting a second career, particularly as an entrepreneur, was incredibly anxiety-inducing for me. I had never run my own business before and tried to do as much research as I could to prepare myself for this next chapter.

The hardest part of running my business was finding clients. I have always considered myself an extrovert and someone that loves to meet others, so I really tried to lean into networking and building relationships. A lot of people are incredibly nervous about working with a financial professional because they believe they are going to be judged, shamed, or blamed for any financial mistakes they’ve made in the past. I have made it a goal of mine to make sure that I create a safe space for my clients to be open and vulnerable without the worry of being judged because we have all made financial mistakes and it does not define us.

After spending 3 years running my business with Transamerica Financial Advisors, I decided to move to an independent firm called 29:11 Financial Planning as it allowed me to do more of what I loved without the need to hustle for clients and business. Amy King had already made the firm an established business in the Arvada community and it was a great fit to join and help drive her mission of helping women with their finances. I feel much more supported and at home at this firm and feel that I can really serve my clients the best from here!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to a few of the local museums like the Nature and Science Museum, Denver Art Museum, and Meow Wolf (definitely a trippy kind of museum).

For nature, I would walk around City Park, take them to the Denver Botanic Gardens, and drive through Rocky Mountain Arsenal to see the bison.

I also love taking tours, so going to the Coors brewery, Celestial Seasonings, and Hammonds for all of their tours would be super fun and unique.

We would look for some shows to watch at the Paramount, Gothic Theatre, Fiddler’s Green, and of course, Red Rocks.

Finally, I would love to give them a sense of the food and beverage scene in Denver. Some of my favorite spots are Jovanina’s Broken Italian, Spice Room, Sushi Den, Olive & Finch, Blue Island Oyster Bar, and Los Chingones.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely owe my current success to my business partner, Amy King. Amy is an advisor that has been in the industry for 30 years and has worked in all areas of finance. I have been looking for a female advisor to help me reach my full potential in the industry and she came into my life at just the right time!

Amy started 29:11 Financial Planning in 2022 because she had experienced the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated industry. She worked at firms that told her what to wear, what to say, and didn’t consider her an equal. Those experiences have pushed a lot of women out of the industry, but Amy has always loved what she does and knew there was a better way on the horizon. She decided to become her own boss and create a firm that allowed her to help the clients she loved to work with and make her own rules.

We were introduced through a mutual connection and at the time, she was looking to bring on a junior advisor to help her run the firm and take on new clients. I had been looking for an opportunity like this for months and when we met, it was clear we were very similar in our desire to help women become more empowered and educated around their finances. It was impressive to see how successful her firm had become in just 3 years and how involved she was with her community.

I am so appreciative that Amy gave me a chance to become the advisor I always wanted to be and to do so with her amazing firm. We love talking to others about what we do and how we got to where we are and we want to continue to be stewards of our community and help others.
